Good luck to Lord Jamar. He is entitled to a view and so am I. So are other men in skirts. I do not like Rap music or even his dress sense and he will no doubt ignore any negative sentiment. Sadly, this is true for most rap, nowadays. It's a shame, because the genre was originally produced to give introspection of society and sense of self. There are plenty of good rap music out there; it's just not played on the radio, and what's popular is mostly just vapid garbage. Rap has potential to be the most poetic genre there is, but the "p" in Rhythm AND Poetry" is disregarded by so many people. It's a shame, really.

The irony of rap rhyming with crap. The only rap song I ever liked was Grandmaster Flash’s The Message. All the rest deserve the letter C put before rap to spell Crap.

Again, not every rap song is like what you often see on the radio. There genuinely are good rap songs with deep and insightful lyricism. Songs that don't brag about riches. Songs that don't degrade women. Songs that don't glorified gang stuff. Songs without profanity. Songs that don't indulge in drugs and alcohol. Degrading an entire music genre because you personally don't like it is just asinine.

I wasn’t degrading the whole rap genre. I was degrading most of it which is rap music made today. Don’t get me wrong but there was some good rap music in the 1980s which is my favourite decade for music anyway. As I mentioned on here Grandmaster Flash The Message was very good and the lyrics were meaningful. Also there was a rap song on a Miami Vice soundtrack album that was in the similar vein of Grandmaster Flash that I enjoyed and I also enjoyed White Lines and that rap track Captain Sensible did called Wot.

Perhaps I shouldn't have been so brash with my response; I just get a bit irritated over the notions such as rap somehow "not" qualifying as music because it usually doesn't have melodies. These people don't seem to understand that percussion instruments typically aren't played as melodic instruments, so lots of music won't have a melody, either.

Another hip-hop group, De La Soul, commonly mocked the "Gangsta Rap" scene that was catching on during the tail end of the '80s. Their first record was a masterpiece, and I think it's something that you'll like too. 3 Feet High and Rising has so many hits, like "The Magic Number", "Ghetto Thang", "Eye Know", "Tread Water", and "Me Myself and I".

Indeed, a lot of rap has serious meaning in the lyrics. I don't think it's crap, it can get pretty deep.

Freestyle is nothing short of flat out talent and skill. I remember a kid in my high-school that could freestyle with the best of them, he'd always draw a crowd when he'd get started.

I understand. However, I didn’t like how the quote was aimed at me not liking most rap when others on this thread expressed that they didn’t like most rap either.

I am a fan of electronica and experimental music and a lot of that doesn’t have melody and still sounds enjoyable.

Anyway, I’ll give De La Soul a listen.
