I recall reading that the Macabi skirt is worn by men who go white water rafting. Sarongs as beach wear. Insulated skirts for cold weather. Rain wraps. Skirts for contra dancing (subculture costume). Is the rain kilt a wrap skirt? or a 'proper' skirt? (whatever the term for "not a wrap" skirt is) I am very tempted to get one for wet sailing, to wear over whatever skirt I am using instead of sticking on sailing waterproof trousers, which are not all that comfortable over a Macabi!

It's rather a poor picture, taken by one of my students using his telephone.

This week we were in attendance at the annual meeting of the Society of Naval Engineers, in Washington DC. The photo attached was taken just moments after The Secretary of The Navy left the podium.

About 500 people in attendance total, of which 10% were officers in uniform, the rest military civilians or defense contractors. Not exactly a hotbed of freestyle fashion. I did get several double takes, but of course all were far too polite to make any comment. More importantly, all the people that actually know me from my many decades in this industry took the skirt right in stride, with a comment like "ah, rattling their cages again, eh?" My research over the past five years was sponsored by the US Office of Naval Research, and my research sponsor was a panelist in one of the sessions. The comments from that source were about a new book recommended for me to read, and colleagues to network with in ... couldn't care less about the clothes.

My point is really for the newbies: I can wear a skirt in the Pentagon. Nobody really cares.

Chris is a guy that gets paid to "think outside the box" (and "outside the box" thinking in a niche realm is truly remarkable) and as another of my correspondents has mentioned, "The best place to find somebody who thinks outside the box is to look outside the box".

I rather suspect that most of us here are "outside the box" types -- and it's a big wonderful world outside of those confines! More folks need to experience the freedom that broadened horizons bring.

I'm getting to hate boxes save for when good things show up on my doorstep contained therein.

Here's what I wound up wearing while I was out and about today. No, the white/black Ikat print skirt wasn't visible - hitched the leaf-print skirt up a little to help show the detail at the tops of the trouser socks better.



Anyway, no one really seemed to care.

Ahah! A nice camo skirt. I'll be after one of those.
Did have a look around Amazon etc re camo skirts. Seen most before, none to my liking. The "rain kilts" showed only black, but my existing Macabis are good rain skirts, as they dry really quickly. Normally I wait untill it's not raining before venturing out, in winter anyway. In summer I'm likely to whizz out on purpose for the fun of it. I am just about to order one of those black rain kilts, black looks the most waterproof on the specs. I couldn't believe how fast I got my skirt soaked while adjusting my external heating boiler in a downpour yesterday, it took ages for the denim to dry out. That was seriously heavy rain!

But then it wouldn't be an external boiler? I would probably end up in trouble for lack of planning permission or something! I was just turning the hot water as off as it will go and backing off on the CH temp. I would normally just kill the power to the boiler but knowing my luck there would be a sudden freeze while I am away from home, so I thought I would leave it with power so it can keep itself thawed out. That was serious rain! A torrent just ran off my sailing waterproof jacket and straight onto the skirt, not sure if ordinary jeans would have been more or less comfortable in the same circumstances. The rain kilt is ordered, it should be ideal for skirted sailing in Scottish weather. From the photos I think it is a skirt rather than a kilt, I see no pleats and I see no apron or evidence of it being a wrap. I hope that is the case because I would rather have a skirt than a wrap-around type garment, even if it is a bit more of a chore to put it on over a skirt, I find wrap or kilt types tend to fly more.
