Strange, very strange.

Post by Sarongman »

Here we are only 9 days away from the shortest day (Winter solstice) and, last night a supersize storm cell, that was nearly a tornado, (Weather radar detected rapid rotation) has devastated a strip of about 50 metres by 4 kilometres, just a few kilometres from here. This is summer weather, not midwinter. I had a terrified Border Collie stuffed up beside me while the lightning show occurred but, until this morning's news, was unaware of the chaos just a few K's away.

We're coming up on the longest day of the year (Summer Solstice) in several days' time and we're expecting a Nor'easter tonight and tomorrow and it's been cool enough that I'm back to wearing tights with my skirts.

Good job for looking after the pooch. I'm glad you're both safe.

For once, I'm in the right place for weather; beautiful day, no wind, so I went for a long cycle ride and had my first swim of the season. Didn't even need a towel to dry off.

Does seem strange though, having to wait nearly to the solstice to be comfortable in the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, we are rather near the Straits of Gibraltar which let in a lot of cold currents from the ocean. Perhaps I should have retired to Tunisia.

I was, of course skirted -- on the bike, not in the water! Easy off, easy on, before and after a spell on the beach.

Pretty normal showery Winter wetness here, too, with just 1 week to the Summer Solstice! Today's high: 13 degrees Centurion, would you believe it. Frequent squally showers and longer periods of rain with winds up to 40 MPH for good measure.
Athlone rowing regatta tomorrow has been cancelled for the 2nd year in a row. Rowing racing eights, fours &c. into a force 7 is not only impossible, but dangerous as well.
Blame the evaporation up out of the Med, which ensures that cubic kilometres of Atlantic water charge eastwards through the Straights of Gib. constantly, ensuring somewhat bracing water temps. at all Med resorts for more than 100 miles along both coasts. Better the Eastern Med, where e.g. in S. Turkey the water will be 21-23 degrees now, except in 'Coldwater Bay' near OluDeniz, where a mountain stream from high up empties cold freshwater into it below the surface, thus lowering the temp. there to about 20 deg.....Bracing, but nice.

Solid rain puntuated by thunderstorms with lightning and even heavier showers, broken by splashes of sunshine!
That's when I dash to the bank, do shop while next burst happens before making it home with the port.
