That's what more than a few of us here are doing as we try to refine our own senses of style and whatever the image is that we wish to project.
The problem with experimentation, though, is sometimes it goes horribly wrong. Personally, I draw the line at whether I recognise the bloke staring back at me from the mirror -- or better, in a photograph. I have definitely put things together by way of experimentation that I would
never wear "on the street", and so the results of those experiments have been abandoned. However, I'm getting better at putting workable looks together, especially with colour -- I got a, "Wow! That looks good!" from The Wife the other day for a rig I put together with a base of purple and black, and which I wore to work (purple and shades of grey diagonal-plaid mid-calf-length skirt, roughly matching purple opaque tights, black waistcoat, and a purple dress shirt).
Note that the colour-pallette above is quite different from what lots of guys here will say is "masculine". I call foul on that because unless the look is badly over the top the guy himself will pull it through if he's confident enough.
