Gastric Brooding Frog

Post by Sarongman »

Scientists, here in Australia, have had success with the DNA sequences of the Gastric Brooding Frog placed into an egg of an unrelated species. They created the living embryo from tissues kept frozen in a laboratory for over 30 years. This frog has been extinct for that long, so to bring back a living example is, to me, a wonderful triumph. Evidently, the DNA must be clear and good enough to do this, so we cannot bring back the Thylacene or any other species made extinct in the past hundred years that haven't been frozen----BUT---It isn't outside the bounds of possibility that, on a much more ambitious scale, that the Woolly Mammoth, snap frozen around 12000 years ago, could make a comeback!

I hope they remembered to keep the DNA from two of them - one male and one female!
Keep on skirting,

Can I eat the legs?
Seriously, though it is awe inspiring that something that would have been considered science fiction not so long ago is now fact.
My dad died some 45 years ago, fairly intelligent and curious about the world. He could never have conceived that a device that fits the palm of the hand could have alllowed global communication. He would also have approved that it was not the preserve of the rich or famous.
That is, but one small example and we really don't know where all the advances will take us. Interesting times indeed.
