Jigsaw Puzzles

Post by Uncle Al »

Hi folks :D

I thought I'd pass this along as a stress-relief mechanism.

If you like working Jigsaw Puzzles but don't have the room to keep
them on the kitchen/dining room table and don't want to keep a
card table set up, try www.thejigsawpuzzles.com

I use this site to help "settle my nerves" plus there's no 'mess'.
You don't have to worry about a dog or cat making off with a
much needed piece to the puzzle you're working on. I prefer
to work the 100 piece 'classic' cut puzzle. Not hard on the eyes
and doesn't take much time.

I'm not promoting this site for any financial gain, just the FUN
:jocolor: :geek: :jocolor: :geek: :jocolor: :geek: :jocolor: of working puzzles.
Also helps to keep your brain up to speed ;)

Damn neat - Thanks Uncle Al.
Takes a bit of getting used to moving the pieces around so that they do not overlap.

If you want to relief stress don't attempt to solve the unconventional diabolical jigsaw puzzle WITHOUT BORDERS !
Most everyone starts to solve a puzzle by arranging all the border pieces and then filling into the center from that point.
BUT WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THERE ARE "NO BORDER PIECES" !
My aunt and uncle set up two card tables or the dining room table if the puzzle looks easy to solve quickly.
One card table to set up the border pieces and form the outside edge of the puzzle.
The other table has all the pieces sorted by color i.e. blue sky; green grass; red barn siding etc.
Quite an efficient production solving a 1000 piece puzzle in a short period of time.
But without borders all you can do is lump the pieces by color and of course it does help to have a picture of the puzzle
completed on or inside the box.
But NO BORDER PIECES now that is madness to the nth degree !

You can wear a skirt but it is not going to help !

I recall when I was a youngster, my parents bought for me a 1,000-piece puzzle that was a shot of the -- then very new -- Boeing 747 cockpit instrument panel. If I recall correctly, I started out in the center near the throttles and worked outwards based on instruments I could recognise. The border went on dead last.

The thing was subsequently mounted and hung on my wall for the next decade and change and was still there several years after I'd moved away. I should have grabbed it.

From a young age we always had a large jigsaw puzzle ( the bigger the better and typically 2000 or even 3000 pieces if we could get them ) to do over Christmas. There were only 3 TV channels at that time and not much on even then. We would use the dining table and put a plastic sheet and table cloth over at meal times. Still do this fifty years later although we can generally only get 1000 piece jigsaws nowadays. I have used jigsaw sites in the past but not found any so far that have encouraged me to revisit. I'll give this one a try though.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

A current 747 has such a different set of instruments that your jigsaw puzzle, now, would be a museum piece. I know this from seeing a programme detailing the complete stripping down and refurbishment of a 747 and seeing the difference between the latest and the earliest. So much digital material is now there as to make it seem quite simple.

Back to the subject in hand, I do like that jigsaw puzzle but i still gravitate towards Free Cell for stress relief and you don;t need an internet connection. The Win.7 version, where you can go right back to the start has saved my bacon more times than I care to count

1. Another place to find them is the New Yorker magazine website where you can work a puzzle to create a random cover: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/covers/jigsaw

2. The most difficult real jigsaw is a large, complicated image printed on both sides of the pieces, with one image rotated 90 degrees.
When I heard about skirting, I jumped in with both feet!

I had a go yesterday -- a bit of fun and a good variety of shapes and sizes. I like the way the pieces click together when you choose the right place, but I could do with a second screen to put all the loose pieces which do rather clutter the place at first.
Thanks for the tip, Uncle Al.

Another neat thing in addition to the clicking of the pieces mating together is the entire layout is always oriented
in the same direction. So you do not have to rotate pieces to put into place. Unlike real world puzzles where the
pieces are dumped out of the box turning and falling every which way including wrong side up.

Now if they would come up with a reasonable amount of work space to assemble the puzzle.

Thanks Uncle Al - the puzzles give me something entertaining to do pre-forum reading !
