Here be Dragons!

Post by Sarongman »

My better half is desirous of writing her family history, but has a problem with dyslexia and, even discounting creative spelling, only she can read her handwriting. Has anybody here had any experience of "Dragon Naturally Speaking"? I am getting her a Sony voice recorder and hope it can be linked in to the Dragon software for ease and convenience. Agatha Christie had dyslexia, but also had a stenographer!

Dragon Software only works on your computer. Your wife
could record something when she's away from the computer,
then "play-back" what she recorded with the microphone of
the headset next to the speaker of the recorder. She will
have to "train" the software to recognize her voice, how
she speaks, and she will need to learn the commands for the
software. Then the 'Dragon' would recognize her voice either
directly or via the recorder.

Good luck :!:

Hello all, after a long time reading the Skirtcafe forums and never posting I thought I'll add my two-pennath to this thread.

Further to Uncle Al's post, if the Sony voice recorder you are getting is digital and if the Dragon software has been trained with the user's voice (a minimum of 30 mins), the user can then use a digital Dictaphone. On connecting the device by USB, you can then import the media file into Dragon to automatically translate. The user can then check the result to confirm the text is correct, if it's not, as the user corrects the text the Dragon software continually learns the user's correct pronunciation. The help menu Dragon has provided is excellent.

On installing the Dragon software make sure that you select the correct language e.g. American English, UK English e.t.c, it does make a difference if you want the software to understand you.

You can reprogram the default commands the software uses, for example when in an open plan office using the default word SCRATCH THAT to delete the text I had read in, led to continuous snide remarks on how my fleas were... :?

Lastly you can create several user profiles and export them e.g. to a USB stick, useful as a backup if the PC breaks down, if you want to import the users profile to another PC without having to go through training again, or if you want versions for when you have a cold or hay fever.

Sorry for the length of post, for my sins I teach IT for the NHS in the South West England.

Thank you welldidi, I will get Dragon on the strength of your post (I'm looking at 2.o Student /Teacher). I am intrigued that you haven't posted until now and then only to help and clear up some concerns I was having. Would you like to post an introduction sometime? All genuine new members are more than welcome, so :welcome:
