Yes, a stupid splash system was in place. I think, when Hudson, the parent company, went to a six cylinder engine, they built to a price rather than the obvious quality of the previous inlet over exhaust engine. I've seen an early 20s Essex up close, and the quality put the later ones to shame. Funnily though, they kept roller cam followers probably due to quantity manufacture. I wonder what may conceivably interchange with the BIG Hudson Super Six. My only nostalgia for the Essex was due to the blood sweat and a few tears (of frustration) expended in the rebuild over an 8 year period (learning a bit along the way.)
I nearly got my hands on a Silver Anniversary Buick master six (also a wreck) but was beaten by the local police senior sergeant. That engine wouldn't have looked out of place in a Cat D6!
My Grandfather's first car was an Oakland in 1924 (later to be renamed Pontiac) Followed by a Velie sedan. Check out this baby!

Very like my Buick. I'll have to dig out a photo of it. That's got roller cam followers as well, and artillary (wooden spoked) wheels.
The slightly earlier Essexes with the four cylinder engine were a lot better. Essexes were known for exceptional bodywork. They'd jack up the sedan car by the doors to demonstrate. A bloke put that Super Six body onto a Rolls-Royce chassis!

Earlier on, I said that I had learnt to drive ( and got my licence) in a Daimler Majestic Major. Sorry, I got it wrong! The Majestic Major was a V8 automatic of a later date. The type was a Regency with the 4,5 litre inline six and the wilson preselector gearbox. It also came as a Ghia sports model----oh I wish!

Gosh, a lot ahead of my time. I learned to drive in my 1935 Morris eight. We certainly did a good lot of drunken trips in that to any famous artists that were at the Auckland town hall. That is 100 miles from our "Ranchhouse" pad in Waihi.

They included: Lous Armstrong (Seen also in Sydney).
Dave Brubeck.
Peter Paul and Mary.
Modern Jazz Quartet.
Eddie Condon...

Jack, thanks for posting that picture, that was (and hopefully still is) a beautiful beastie. The U.S. cars were more suited to the greater distances in Australia than the smaller English cars which, mostly, were urban cars like a modern hatchback. Your Buick is a prime example of a graziers car of twenties wool boom.

Yes, still exists. It is in Belgium. Had to sell it unfortunately. A return journey became financially and politically impossible.
