Question for election day

Obama certainly got most of the Irish vote. I meet a lot of people every day and there's a certain sense of relief all round here.

On his white antecedents' side he traced some 7 generations back an emigrant from Moneygall, Co. Offaly and during his brief visit here in May 2011 he took off from the American embassy lawn in Dublin in three identical helis, flew straight over my house and had his much-photographed 'pint' in Ollie Hayes's pub in that village, some 100 miles SW.

We were campaigned ad nausium on some very controversial issues including family planning, marijuana, and gay unions. Why is it that a man simply wearing a skirt should be so deeply scrutinized with such emotional response? Society fascinates me.

Although it came out very much NOT in my favor, I'm so glad that it's over. I just get so sick of all the candidate and proposition advertising, all the blatent lies, etc. All the round-about ways of saying things. Why don't they just come out and say what they really mean? "My opponent, candidate John Q. Public, is a dick." Now that would be fun.

Consider this: Election time is always very hard for business owners who normally advertise on the electronic media (TV and radio) because the final month or so is just so saturated with political ads. TV and radio is required to air ads for federal offices (president, senate, and house). So if you've got a product or service to advertise, well then good luck getting a slot. Now that it's over we can get back to real ads, you know, for lawyers and weight loss plans and stuff.

One of my favorites is for Medifast Weight Control. A testimonial by a formerly-fat dog groomer named John. He says "A woman came in looking for John, said he did a great job with her dog last time and wanted him again. It took us about 5 minutes convince her that I was the John that did her dog." Bwah ha ha ha, classic! Ok, I hope that it translates into UK or Australian English properly (let me know if it doesn't).

Indeed it is. Two other brewers purvey stout here, Murphys (tiny bit sweeter than J Arthur G.) and Beamish (a little tarter). Both have much smaller franchises, of course than Guinness and are not so universally available.

Her Majesty QE2 actually visited the Dublin Guinness Storehouse also in May 2011, witnessed the perfect pint being poured, but true to Royal Protocol, didn't sip.

Would you prefer a President (or PM) who drinks or one who doesn't? There is no right or wrong answer, I'm just curious because I know people who don't trust others who don't drink, for some reason.

Hitler did not drink, did not eat meat and did not take drugs or smoke. Churchill drank, smoked and ate meat and was unfit. One judges a person by their character and motives not by their personal habits.

There is a story about British TV executive trying to interest his American counterpart in putting cricket on the telly. He explains what the game is about, a bit about the rules, the traditions, the subtleties, etc. When he has finished, the American asks how long it all takes. "Three days, sometimes five," comes the reply. Incredulous, the American continues, "And at the end, the team with the most runs wins, right?"
"Oh, no. As often as not, it's a draw."
"Five days and no result? Forget it!"

Which brings me to Florida. Three days and no result! They still haven't finished counting the votes. How?

Dramatic effect? Being "fashionably late"? Busted voting machines? Hurricanes? Alligators ate the homework? Ballot counting done by pharmacists?

I don't know. I'm just glad it's not a repeat of 2000.

Methinks we have a tad more people in all but about 6 individual states of 52 than Scotland does...but maybe I'm wrong. I think california state alone has more people than Scotland, Ireland and the rest of the islands of what used to be called "Brittania". Also, none of our voting blocs, even the largest ones have hit upon the idea of breaking the vote up into multiple days and insist in jamming them all into the same day, TUESDAY! I don't think anyone but Obama or a similar person will ever get into the Presidential office in the USA in the future.

Certainly not if the media has anything to do with it. It's amazing how similar Obama is to William Jennings Bryan.
