A friend with whom I used to take a drink after work who was much older than me started a new (big) business supplying cranes for containers to the ports and knew he would have to put in serious motoring miles while setting it all up. He chose a Volvo, because A/ they go on forever & B/ if someone is unfortunate enough to hit you they will definitely come off worse.

I agree the internet is incredible. At one stage my simultaneous chess opponents were in Australia, Columbia, Brazil, the US, of course, the UK and India!

Not exactly.. They are polite when they first wake up in the morning and until starting to drink at lunch etc. After getting out of the various lounges at 2 pm after a 2 hour lunch, and heading to their favorite watering holes for the rest of the day and night, the only "POLITE" drivers you see on the road are the ones wrapped around a tree or the base of a bridge or overpass. OR sunken in a river or someone's swimming pool. :D :D :D

To return to the thread, my first car (registered in my name, that is) was a 1928 Essex Super Six tourer. That was in the early 70s. It had a 3 speed non synchro gearbox which was lovely and easy to use, unlike the 1942 lend lease Fargo two and a half ton truck we also owned, whose gearbox was a horror and, to me, almost impossible to change gears without some grating!
Just a month ago there was a 1958 Land Rover series 1, 88" for sale and I was sorely tempted except for the fact that it had a Holden 6 cylinder engine under the bonnet (hood to our U.S. friends) and that would soon rip the little transmission to bits.

Here is a pic of our new camper van, bought over from the states. It was difficult to get our daughter out on the first night, she wanted to sleep in it on the drive! We are looking forward to many weekend away it it.

That's a real Classic in great nick, DTSA. Does she have the flat four 1600cc aircooled, or have they put the watercooled turbodiesel in? Hard to determine what year she is, but she's definitely 2nd. Mill. AD!

Hi Kirbstone, it has the 1700 pancake engine (air cooled). The reason I chose this one is that it has not been welded and has 80% original paint. It was made in 1973 and shipped over to New York before making its way over to California. Just need to get some curtains before using it for camping.

If your example spent years in the USA it probably is markedly less rusty than those living 'here'. Do you live in Norfolk, UK, or America?

We're into campervans. We bought our first in Germany in 1987, LHD. 1600 flat turbodiesel, and had the fixed high roof retrofitted to qualify for reduced road tax & insurance in Ireland.

In 2006 we sold her on and replaced her with an '03 T4 type with 2.7 diesel 5-pot up front. You'll probably think we're plebs...and you'd be right. She (My MM) has had the rainbow and music put on the later one too, professionally this time.

We live in Norfolk in the UK. I was told a Uk one would need the bottom 6 inches replacing due to rust and that put me off a little bit. I do like the graphics on the side, it looks great. I have seen a few customised ones about. You are not "plebs" at all. I think I must have been going through a midlife crisis as it was a motorbike or a bus and the bus won. I am mad about photography and I am hoping to get a few early morning shots after staying in the bus the night before.

This is what we replaced it with. She's headed off to the Extreme SW. coast (Co. Kerry) where Sunsets are the thing.
The awning I swiped off the 'old' camper which was longer up top than the new one, so it projects forward, but keeps the doorway dry when it's open, (& the heavens, too!).

Meanwhile my old '95 petrol Merc. has travelled more than 240,000 miles (the distance to the Moon!) & still does precisely what it sez on the tin.

Looks good Kirbstone, the awning I was given with the camper looks like it comes from the 70's and weighs a ton. I am going to have to put it up in the garden and check it out. The trailer looks good and with all the toys my daughter wants to take with her I shall have to have a look at getting a tow bar fitted. The Merc has done very well after all those miles.

Big and Bashful, those tents are great. I saw one at a recent festival and they even have a sleeping compartment. I do prefer the one next to it though!
