Anything goes?

Post by MiltonKeynes »

I've been thinking about what it is OK to wear skirtwise. For men in general this is uncharted territory.

When I look back at the days of hippies and flower power and glam rock, I see that men were not afraid to wear patterns, colours and flower designs. Even today Hawaiian shirts and surf shorts are brigh and colourful.

So, when it comes to skirts why shouldn't they too be bright, colourful and dare I say it, frilly. After all we are the vanguard here, so shouldn't we be doing what we want?

What say you?

I'll go with plain, mostly, but a bit of frilly sounds great!
Quite keen on frilly!
As far as kilts goes, I got a woman's black kilt from ebay recently, quite heavy material - jury still out on that one

In my opinion one of the reasons I use skirts is because this. I have never been fond of jeans, I don't like thick and heavy clothing. I have never done that.
Before my skirtwearingtime, which started quite recently, I'm sad to say, I used to wear lighter trousers.

The feeling of a lighter fabric is enogh reason for wearing it, I think.
In summer, jeans...? Really? :D

Anything goes? For me, yes, most of it does! Not everything, but most of it.
I prefer a 'woman'-skirt in favour of a kilt, but no one is a big no for me.
I would not end up in the same corner as with a mans suit if I now have the opportunity to wear something else, I would like to be able to wear whatever I like and want, not one single item in one colour. Look at corporate meetings, the male part. Sad if that would happen when we could change that. We already do not follow norms, so...? Go with what you like and want, we already wear the 'wrong' thing so why bother? :D

I think this world would be a better place if somewhat frilly, colourful and flower-y, actually.

lol, I'm one of the ones on here who prefers a more 'masculine' look for a skirt, but I'm perfectly happy with anyone who wants to wear more frilly, colourful, or patterned clothing than I do.

Oh wouldn't it be nice to be able to go out in public in whatever clothing we wanted and not be harassed by the masculine police :D I once went out in a black full length tiered skirt which I really like wearing. As I was getting back into my van to go home some redneck in the same parking lot yelled out "hey... you forgot your purse". They left so fast that I didn't have time to respond. I didn't care... I was happy to wear the skirt although it was a bit cumbersome getting into the van :)

Should that be "masculinity police"? Though I think the term "gender police" might be even more accurate.

When I buy a skirt I almost always ask myself if I would wear trousers in the same fabric and colour. There are one of two exceptions, though. But that's jsut me. If you want to go for flowery or frilly, go ahead!

Most observers would only see that you were wearing a skirt. It's the breaking of the cardinal rule "men don't wear skirts" that matters; everything else is a minor detail.

That would likely work quite well for a good number of blokes, but my favourite skirts are in fabrics that (men's) trousers are just simply not manufactured in (nor anything else, I'll add). Colour is the best determinant, although that can vary. When, for instance, was the last time you saw a pair of red trousers (and to "kick it up a notch", red velvet trousers)? Prints, too, seem to be taboo below the waist, but I have seen trousers with designs working their way up one leg (or both) that could work very well on an avant-garde guy.

It's all down to one's own comfort level (this, coming from a trousered bloke in head-to-toe black), so if you think it looks good and "works" (i.e. it doesn't make you look like a fool) I'd say, "Give it a go."

Here it is. If you're wearing a denim skirt of shorts-length, the odds are that nobody'll notice; however, if it's outside that envelope then folks most likely will, and then it's down to whether it looks believable. If it is, then you'll either win acclaim or folks will ignore you; if the look isn't, then you'll either get derision or be ignored. Note that the probability of getting ignored is present in both; unless you look positively outlandish, I really doubt that anybody'll care.

I've had s similar comment while wearing a black kilt at a petrol station. The comment was "I like your skirt" followed by them exiting the garage at speed. I guess we're just braver than they are
But I agree with you - it would be lovely to be able to go out in whatever we want. In the summer when its hot(ish) I wear a sarong out and about - its so comfortable that I just don't care what others may think - and any comments have always been positive, and always from women.

The first skirt I owned was a hawaiian print that buttoned down the front. It was neatly folded on the "free" table at work so I brought it home thinking it was a shirt. When I unfolded it, I laughed and put it on as a joke. I now own around a dozen skirts and 2 kilts.
