Republican Debates ?
I don't know about anyone else but I think this is the 'bottom of the barrel' when it comes to Republicans and their bid for the presidency. These people are all so out of touch its unbeliveable. This country is being run by lobbyists and we are electing figure heads. What do you think.

Er! Sorry, I don't even follow politics here in the UK.
The media here, also portray the US politicians as saying whatever the people they're talking to want to hear, or is that just me being cynical?

He'd have to give up the retrocomputing, but I've no doubt he'd have a better idea of what to do than some of the current candidates! All he needs is a supporter with $500,000,000 to spare.
But what do you think campaigning in an ankle-length skirt would do for his poll ratings? The Tea Party might not like it, and plenty others besides. But it would raise the profile of skirtsmen.
Politicians' hypocrisy is just breathtaking sometimes, isn't it? You almost have admire their brass neck. Who was it who spearheaded the efforts to get rid of Clinton for allegedly porking Monica whatsername, while himself having an affair? And has the chutzpah to try to make a virtue of it on live TV? Newt isn't really slimy enough, he should be called toad or lying git. Mind you, sounds a bit like a certain Mr Major over here, all "family values" and "back to basics" while shagging Edwina Currie.

Nigh on all politicians are knobs, or knobbesses. In it for what they can get. Lies, greed and incompetance. Should be made to re-apply for their jobs every year. They made tradesmen here do it with re-examination ( gas fitters, electricians etc). Police backup staff and council workers had to re-apply to do the same job, but it never seems to be their bosses who have to do it.

Forgot to say " Carl for President"
With his superb reasoning shown here in this forum, he should blow the rest out of the water.
All he needs extra is an armoured back panel to stop the knife thrusts from other politicians.

It'll never happen as long as I'm in proper mental form. Some things are just too important to let go of.skirtyscot wrote:He'd have to give up the retrocomputing [...]
Of course I'd not look a 500 meg donation in the teeth -- I'd set up a proper world-class museum with proper outreach programs with the money and endow the institution so it'd have a very long run indeed. This is our heritage, dammit, it needs better than what it's getting today!
I'd be willing to take on the naysayers either (as a famous sci-fi author once put it commenting on Dr. Who) "either one on one or as a group". Sadly, reason does not usually win the day.skirtyscot wrote:But what do you think campaigning in an ankle-length skirt would do for his poll ratings? Can I use active armour? Please?Gregg1100 wrote:All he needs extra is an armoured back panel to stop the knife thrusts from other politicians.
In theory they are -- that's why elections have to be held every so often and the term of office is set by statute. Where this fails is where certain politicians do a very good job at representing their constituencies and keep getting re-elected year after year after year -- and sometimes those re-elections are warranted! The problem with this is that one constituency's gain is often another constituency's loss. And it's in this vein that the USA is experiencing its worst conflict in decades.Gregg1100 wrote:[Politicians s]hould be made to re-apply for their jobs every year.
Concerning my earlier commentary on the assorted "Talebans" -- precisely the only thing that sets "ours" (the USA) from "theirs" (insert other states here) in that "ours" wear neckties. And "power ties" to boot, and I thank Sapphire for that observation. (I need to buy or steal another "power tie". I seem to have lost my last one shortly after

Had one of those AHA! moments early this morning regarding this topic. It is no secret that I have negative feelings regarding all of the Republican candidates. Here's my AHA! I find them all insincere. I don't think that any of them really cares about what happens in this country and to this country. I think that they are all in the race to capture a prie, that prie being the Presidency, and for their own self aggrandisement. To me, it appears that what they really want is to be crowned President. The rest be damned.
Oh well, that's just the way I see it.

Four more years of that empty suit and the USA will have become the "Democratic Republic of America"

Re: Republican Debates ?
While I fully understand the connotations of "democratic republic" re left-wing regimes, a democratic republic is exactly what the USA is meant to be, but it isn't. Mind you, they score one out of two, so they're doing better than us.MiltonKeynes wrote:Four more years of that empty suit and the USA will have become the "Democratic Republic of America"

'Tis a conundrum. Elect and empty suit or refried sleaze.
Since Carl doesn't want the job, I would say elect my aunt and uncle. They are extremely sensible smart people. Alas, they are in their mid 80s and not doing so hot.

Re: Republican Debates ?
For what it's worth, the US of A is not, technically, a democracy -- it's a republic in which the governed (supposedly by consent) elect representatives to Congress and the Executive Branch. The Judicial Branch is supposedly there to keep the other two branches in check. The only form of outright democracy that still exists in the US of A is a quaint tradition in New England known as "Town Meeting" where one vote is actually one vote and it is possible to get one's opinion heard. If one is eloquent -- and lucky -- it's even possible to sway minds into seeing things differently than is usually painted.SkirtyScot wrote:While I fully understand the connotations of "democratic republic" re left-wing regimes, a democratic republic is exactly what the USA is meant to be, but it isn't.
As far as the current crop of candidates go -- on both sides -- I don't like ANY of them. Obama was elected in the hopes that we could turn the country around and right some of the dreadful wrongs that had transpired during the previous administration. And guess what? We've still got Gitmo, we've still got the "Patriot Act", and we're about to get a government that can imprison folks by fiat for an unlimited duration of time, oh, and one that kills its own citizens using unmanned aircraft (again, without charge nor due process). So much for the Constitution that guarantees a speedy trial for offenses. Canada's looking better by the week.
