Would you wear these skirts?

Post by skirted84 »

What does everyone think of these two box pleated knee length skirts for a man in his 20s? (sorry, can't do hyperlinks)

If we can ignore the fact they are made for schools (different debate) do they look suitably male or unisex to be worn as male wear with due consideration to other clothes with them? Not too far from kilts, quite tough fabric (especially the jordanhill one) and knee length.

I think both would be serviceable for a guy in his 20s, as you say, with due consideration to the rest of the outfit. From the looks of things, though, the ones from the second link don't come in sizes large enough for the likes of me (36" waist).

Other items like those might be "netball skirts" or something similar which can come in some rather astounding colours.

Skirted84,
To my opinion both skirts are suitable for guys but not with those mary-janes.
It is a pity there are no Marks and Spencer stores in Holland; I would certainly like to try that M & S skirt on.
By the way, can any of you tell me what UK size corresponds to my 36 inch waist?
Once I tried on an American made The North Face "Horizon" skirt size 12 and that was the right fit.

Probably looking at a 16 to 18, with button and zip fastening. There are no stock of larger sizes probably because they are for school kids, but would be a cracking buy otherwise.
I have a few elasticated waists on some of my skirts- I am a 36 incher too, and depending on who makes the skirts, I can wear a 14, normally a 16. Matalan are very tight, Marks and Sparks about right.

Absolutely unisex.
And they look far better than the millionaires' styles in renesm's thread, too !

Even in Holland you should be able to order that online from M&S. I actually do have this skirt in 31.5 inch navy but even being a 34incher I can get into it so its not precise. Sometimes 32 inch skirts are too tight. Green and brown seem scarce as fewer schools use these colours over here. Its masculine enough without being as heavy and warm as a kilt, enough pleats to walk easily without it blowing about, and comes between the legs as you sit while being much less cumbersome than a kilt. And no I don't work for M&S, I just love that skirt.

Quite a few M&S school skirts would work actually, not because they are childrens clothes but uniforms tend to avoid feminine colours, designs etc. What do you think?

Skirted84,

Buying online always imposes a risk. Last november I ordered a mens skirt from a German webshop and it turned out to be just too large although it was a 36 inch waist. I had to go to the postoffice, wait in the queue for fifteen minutes (which is a problem with my painfull legs) and pay postage to return the skirt.
The two Sportkilts I ordered on the internet have Velcro in the waistband making them adjustable.
The M&S skirt looks really nice but I own enough kilts and skirts to keep me happy. For the time being........

In my opinion both skirts are suitable for men. The one on the first link has pockets which are really useful when you need somewhere to store your phone, wallet, keys etc.

I think a few of the M&S school skirts would suit men, though some maybe not. Opinions please

Though my other favourite is knee length denim, which would be the other totally unisex skirt in an equal world.

I see no problems with these skirts.

Most of them skirts would also be suitable for men. Not too sure about the "Tube Skirt", i just don't see the point of really tight skirts.

I probably would, if I were skinny enough.

O, I forgot to answer your question, would I wear them?

Sure, would I wear an ordinary skirt. I like pleated skirts.

They are meant to fit snugly round the female derriere to attract attention from the male of the species. So they are not for men.

What's more, they should only ever be worn by skinny women - imagine a tubby woman in one! (I have just put myself off my lunch!) So you should not be able to find them in your size, even if you fancied wearing one.
Keep on skirting,

...and on the right derriere they can be remarkably appealing :D
So they are not for men.
Not sure I agree (and incidentally I suspect that most manufacturers would say the same about all of their skirts). They might not be effective at attracting you (or me) when wrapped around a male posterior, but I'm sure there are some male posterior / viewer combinations in which they would prove to be powerful attractants.
What's more, they should only ever be worn by skinny women - imagine a tubby woman in one! (I have just put myself off my lunch!)
While understanding your viewpoint, I would caution that you are judging the whole world by the visual standards you find appealing; others will have different aesthetics and opinions.
So you should not be able to find them in your size, even if you fancied wearing one.
I can not claim a particularly svelte figure, however the local Matelan has tube skirts in sizes that are larger than the skirts I usually buy. Add in the fact that these skirts are very stretchy and I suspect most readers here could find a tube skirt that would fit. Whether they would want to, or indeed whether any unwarned observers could keep their lunch down, is a different issue altogether

On a practical point, one of my son's former girlfriends used to wear a tube skirt when running or cycling on the basis that, because it was so stretchy, it allowed her near total freedom of movement but did not flap around and annoy her. Some men may find that a good reason to wear such a skirt.

Have fun,

Ian. (Sorry, just came out of a rather argumentative meeting).
