Scottish Season on Blighty TV
Scottish Season on Blighty TV
Been watching Blighty TV- about the clans of Scotland. It delves into the history of the Campbells, MacDonalds, Mac Dougals etc(Mac, Mc). A fierce and bloodthirsty era that lasted nearly 8 centuries. No wonder the Germans called the Scots the "Ladies from Hell" in the 1914-18 war. King James 4th of England( I think) ended the hostilities by a law. Lots of inventors, poets came after.

Oh, so untrue. Unfortunately I happen to live on the wrong ruddy side of an ocean and even if I could intercept the satellite transmissions the US sadly use different television standards!Gregg1100 wrote:Sometimes wonder why I bother posting on this site. Making matters worse, I actually did have a bit of an argument with another person at our local establishment regarding history, admittedly regarding computers.
I may, or may not (I really have no clue), have Scots blood somewhere in my veins (most of it's German, and then mixed "western isles" and possibly other northern Europe) but that does not mean that I am not interested. I may not have a kilt, but I do wear other forms of skirts....

Re: Scottish Season on Blighty TV
When I see a documentary on Scottish history, I always watch it. Unfortunately I didn't know about this one as I haven't been watching Blighty. Sorry I didn't reply!
I love the history of Scotland, and am still trying to get my head around all the different clan squabbles. The history of the West coast and the islands fascinates me, but so much happened I find I struggle to remember all the ins and outs.

Hi Greig
To be honest, never heard of Blighty T.V., no sky etc, just mean old freeview. However, if it's Scots history on T.V. your after, google Neil Oliver, he's one of the best presenters I've ever seen. He is actually a Scot and a proper historian to boot. No kilt though.
Scottish history is a hugely complicated affair, ignore one country, Scotland against England. Scotland was hugely divided, the Highlands and Lowlands, the individual Clan Chiefs, the Scots nobles and their varied offspring. Charles Edward Stewart, he of "bonny" fame spent very little time here, raised and educated in France, actually died there, probable cause syphillis. His poorer countrymen, meanwhile had to face the aftermath of Culloden. On a side note of this point, the Aberdeen Militia fought on the side of the "baddies". I found one Kennedy, my family name, who fought for the goodies, listed as a deserter. The Kennedys are a lowland clan, predominantly Ayrshire, no friends to the highlanders.
On another note from 1745, Culloden, the wearing of the kilt was banned, penalty death. That was the true kilt. The skirt version which we are accustomed to now is largely a Victorian invention. For myself, I have only ever hired and worn one at weddings, too expensive to justify anything else. While I respect it as my national costume, I simply prefer skirts.
Steve.

Don't know what you can receive in the way of BBC, but Oliver has come a long way since Coast. He has done at least 2 series on Scottish history and his latest is about Scots explorers. In this, the common thread seems to be that they were totally single minded almost to the point of madness.
Coming from Wick, your dad would certainly have been considered a true Highlander, depending on the family history, your ancestors may also have been victims of the "clearances". A particularly bad bit of our history and especially brutal in the far north.

Hi,
Been watching Neil Oliver tonight on BBC2 actually- he went from Swanage to Lands End. Apparently bowling over to the French coast next time. Only catching up with watching him now I have retired---was always working afternoons into nights. One consolation- missed all the bloody soaps too.
Just starting to look into this ancestry lark- from what I have gathered so far, we may be an offshoot of McDougal clan- got some bumph coming, showing our supposed Coat Of Arms. Never know, I may have lordly forbears, as long as they didn't owe money, and I haven't got to pay it back, I don't mind.
