Today I went into a fabric store and picked out the fabric. It is a (mostly) polyester/spandex blend. The color is lavender.

I like it, long enough to be floor length on me, velvet unfortunately, nice and heavy, warm as well, but not for outdoors use, I would love one in a more robust fabric, preferably waterproof for this climate!

Why "unfortunately" on the velvet? I love the stuff. However, it's not a knockabout sort of fabric and rather needs to be somewhat coddled -- but it's amazing stuff!

I need to get off my backside, put new batteries in the digicam, and get some shots of the two new skirts I got from The Mouseworks (one of which is almost floor-length velveteen and the other fleece).

Velvet is nice, weighty and moves rather nicely, but it is dry clean only and not exactly weather resistant. The robe is good, it has neck ties but needs a belt around gut level. Love the big sleeves! the hood is good as well, makes me feel very hippy like! I need to get a suitable camera out and take a snap of that and of my other recent-ish purchase, a button front denim skirt which cost very little off Ebay.

I have always liked caftans. So when I saw the pattern listed above and it's simplicity I dug out some cotton poly fabric and set to work. I only had enough material to make a short knee length piece. All said and done the caftan came together quite well. The pattern dimensions worked out fine for my 6'-230 # frame. Although on the next one I will try a different neck cut out that eliminates the gathering when the lower diagonals are brought together. The interesting unanticipated outcome of the whole effort was that the garment when worn with loosely tied sash or belt makes a pretty good looking dress. I started the whole process about 10:00 this morning and finished at 6:00 this evening This included 3-4hours of tending to other tasks. I think I will probably make several more with a better quality fabric and color pattern. Also I will most likely make at least one long one, but I really like the short version(knee length)
