Moustaches against cancer?
Further to some discussion of men's health in another thread, let me mention a movement called " Movember".
http://www.movember.com/
The idea is to go from clean-shaven to moustachioed in 30 days, an excuse, a talking point from which to get onto the subject of prostate and testicular cancer, so often neglected my men that are too proud to express concern about such things.
There are various sub-groups for different countries around the world.

So are you a "Mo bro" Martin?
Will you be posting a start of month (clean shaven) picture and progress shots or at least an end of month photo with an upper lip warmer?
I'm still debating with myself whether I can be bothered with all the face scraping, something I gave up many years ago.
Have fun,
Ian.

Do not argue with idiots; they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Re: Moustaches against cancer?
I'm still wondering, Ian.
Unlike you, I prefer to be whiskerless, and am wondering if I will look even worse moustachioed in photos than I do already. Seeing my before- , during- and after-photos could well discourage anyone looking into the question.
I rarely come out looking civilized in pictures these days.

Civilised? How dull!!! I'd far rather be thought of as a good natured barbariancouyalair wrote:I rarely come out looking civilized in pictures these days.

Re: Moustaches against cancer?
Sounds like a great idea, but not for me, as I've not trimmed or cut off my moustache in 60 years I'll probably leave the wispy little thing alone now the rest of my life too.
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

Re: Moustaches against cancer?
Movember is almost upon us and as part of the campaign to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancers men the world over, known as "mo bros", will be growing moustaches during the month.
A friend raised the idea and another also undertook to support it - we'll see if either of them actually does or was it just the beer talking? In the meantime, more information can be found on the Movember website and a really scary picture (or maybe more) can be found here.
I am not going to actively seek money, however if anyone wants to give a quid or two to support the Institute of Cancer Research or the Prostate Cancer Charity I'm sure they will happily accept donations. The moustache has a month to grow and develop before the beard will be allowed to return (and for those who don't know it; it's bloomin cold around the chin when a beard goes!)
Have fun,
Ian.

I should have preferred kilted or skirted against cancer. A moustace is not really me.

Re: Moustaches against cancer?
I wore a moustach for about a year in my youth and don't really want to start again.
But the main reason I have given up the idea of participating is that I have never received any clear answer about what happens to moneys collected.
There is already funding for research to develop expensive new wonder drugs (that may or may not keep you alive a few months longer), but no-one seems to be interested in finding ways of avoiding cancer in the first place. When our governments take strict measures to control the myriad chemicals put into everyday products, the I'll know that the fight against cancer is serious. Each chemical (pesticides, for example) may not be too harmful taken in isolation, but we don't get them one by one; we get a cocktail every time we eat, drink or breathe.
Preventive measures do not benefit big business, whereas curative treatment costs a fortune for public health services (a bottomless well), but keep shareholders happy. So I don't feel like disfiguring my face to contribute funds to the chemical industry.
Whether I could raise money by wearing a skirt ...? I doubt it, though perhaps some would cough up to see me take it off .... ahem! by which I mean of course, to see me go back to tr#@&#s.

Re: Moustaches against cancer?
Martin,
I agree absolutely with you regarding the money side, hence my decision not to actively collect any.
However I also think the the slogan "Don't die of ignorance" is hugely applicable to both testicular and prostate cancer. If I can help to raise awareness of these conditions and get people talking about them, I reckon I've done something useful for my fellow man and possibly reduced the profits that a drug company may make (just a little) by helping to deprive them of a customer.
Have fun,
Ian.

Re: Moustaches against cancer?
Hate to be controversial here but I think one of the main reasons for cancer being on the increase is down to us not dying from anything else (like all the diseases we've conquered so far). I think that we can't go on forever and death is inevitable.

Re: Moustaches against cancer?
True, renesm1, but if cancer is one of the biggest killers left, we should be trying to find a cure for it.
And there's no doubt that most people could make some changes to their habits, lifestyle, or willingness to go to see the doctor, and reduce the risk of getting cancer, or at least delay its onset.
Also there is a big imbalance between the publicity given to breast cancer and men-only cancers.
