Steve Jobs
Re: Steve Jobs
Being of musical bent I note that some of the greatest composers of all time left us their legacy by departing this life before they were 40....W.A.Mozart, F Mendelsohn, F. Schubert,& Geroge Gerschwin, to mention just four.
In his field, Steve left us an amazing legacy, which was very dependant on advancing technology, so it is extremely fortunate for all of us that he survived to age 56. Nevertheless it is extremely sad that such an amazingly brilliant mind should have been stilled so young.

Re: Steve Jobs
If nothing else, I am known as a bit of a hard-nosed techie, so my view of Mr. Jobs' rather untimely demise may be a bit coloured, for I tend to put technical prowess above managerial finesse. This is not to say that the man was not a master at "technical fashion design", for what he did for the style that we now see on the small (and shrinking) screen cannot be denied. Here's what Wozniak, the real brains behind the original venture had to say about today's news (and recall that it was Woz that was inspired by the elegance of Data General's NOVA that pushed the then youngster a bit).
Interestingly, later on in life, once the invincibility of youth had passed somewhat, Jobs commented thusly on what awaits each and every one of us.
As an aside, in the latter video clip, for a fleeting moment there is a young Steve Jobs in a tie and waistcoat that makes this author recoil a bit because of an eerie resemblance to himself. All I can say is that when Mr. Jobs was younger he had better taste in clothes than he did in later years.
Even though I am not an Apple fan (much less a "fanboy"), I "get" Jobs' sense of technological "style"; much of the groundbreaking work was done years before by the likes of Douglas Engelbart and Xerox (the inventors of the mouse and the GUI, respectively), Jobs honed it to a fine precision that is worthy of the term "couture". We've lost a master.
To crib the quote: "Don't settle!"

It is sad to see anyone die at such a young (to me) age. I don't know the details of how his illness came about and would never want to speculate.
Not being a techy, I always thought that Apple was the first personal computer to be user friendly enough that everyone could own one an use. But maybe that's my non tech view of things. Wasn't Micro-soft founded in order to make the IBM clones as user friendly as the Mac?
Well, I just wonder who will be the next person to step into the shoes Steve Jobs leaves behind?
So sad!
