As off topic as it gets: CGI

Post by crfriend »

I've been a fan of computer graphics for years, and worked in the field of CADD/CAM for a while with some focus on visualisation technology. But that was a very long time ago, and possibly in a galaxy far far away.

However, this little gem called "Rockfish" remains a favourite of mine. I was hoping that Blur Studios, the folks that produced it originally, would have had a hi-res copy on their website, but alas that was not to be. I guess that "old" just doesn't cut it any more (as if less than ten years can be considered "old"). I suppose it's not as computer-geeky as the work done in The Last Starfighter, on a Cray Y-MP, or Tron, parts of which were done on a Foonly PDP-10 close -- but it's a fun watch.

Today, however, it's frequently not possible to tell what's CGI in a film and what's not -- and that, I feel, has cheapened the theatre-going experience. When was the last time you saw stunts like the ones that Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton did -- for real, because there was no other way of getting the shot?

That was a pretty good piece of animation! I enjoyed watching it!
Not sure what the plot was?
Fish that are rocks? Someone whos fishes for fish that are rocks?
Oh, well.
Lots of good work out there that gets no attention because it isn't a product of the "right" people.
I was watching the HBO series, the Pacific and noticed that all their naval scenes were CGI. Guess you can't make a big movie without it anymore.
But the very first Star Wars movie had more of a real feel to it then the rest. More of a solid steel and iron feel to it the even the next two. Not to mention the other three.
THe original Star Trek series had a more future feel to it then the rest of the shows/movies. They all got junk happy after "Close Encounters" was made and the mother ship appeared, with all the extra bits and pieces attached. Now they all have to have "things" hangin off them.

Wasn't "Rockfish" the little critter/pet's name?? A very good and well made animation. Back 10+ years ago I was all into playing Diablo II..This is far superior to that old stuff I did. Thanks for allowing us to see it Carl. :D :D
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.
