Mybe we should have a humor section!

Post by DALederle »

Could anyone find a way to put in an all humor board in the board index.
One section for all of us to just share our jokes and yucks, with no other discussions or agendas.
When a joke is posted, for fun it seems that sooner or later someone slips in some deep thoughs and the whole thread goes off in another direction.
I appreciate the deep thoughts on life, etc. But I think there's a place for just jokes too.
Anyone else with me on this?

Dennis,
There is already 'a little humour' thread, and at Skip's suggestion some of us have moved our heavy posts to his 'Good old Days' thread, because they wandered off the humour theme.
I wholeheartedly agree we should have what you suggest. because at the moment some of us are skating on thin ice:

Spike Milligen! Never heard of him. But he was funny! Reminds me a bit od Dave Allen at large, which used to shown in our PBS station just before Doctor Who back in 1980s. Whatever became of Dave Allen. He did the THE WORST american accents I ever heard. Especially during his Western skits.
So here's another Milligen I found.

I will scout some more choice clips from my favourite funnies, once I have another months worth of bandwidth. And the upgrade from scant allowance to hopefully copious amounts of downloadage. Just getting to know my new ISP and this one has a working counter of usage, unlike the last ISP. 10 Gig really is nuffink, 60 should be enough I reckon.

In a word, "No."

In justification of that assertion, which I make as Barista, SkirtCafe's primary mission is to get skirts and kilts accepted in the everyday world as common garments for men. We already have a category for humour -- "Off Topic" -- and humour is almost always welcome in mainline threads so long as it's relevant to the thread in question. Establishing another sub-forum for "jokes and gags", which are usually one-way devices, does not seem to me to be a worthwhile complication to SkirtCafe's very clean layout.
When a joke is posted, for fun it seems that sooner or later someone slips in some deep thoughs and the whole thread goes off in another direction.
The "problem" (and it can be that way for a vast range of folks who likely have a vast range of "issues") is that deep thought is part and parcel of what we're trying to do here; if this was a frivolous notion I, for one, would not be here as I have better things to do. I enjoy a good joke, and a well-placed jab, as much as the next guy (possibly more so) but codifying it into the fabric of SkirtCafe isn't helpful to the raison d'etre of the community.

I think that what we have at the moment balances things reasonably well. There are jokers in our midst -- for all of that have that imp in us -- and that won't change, nor should it. The occasional poke, prod, and jab should always remain welcome as they keep us honest; however, those gibes should be offered in good humour and with good feeling, and, ultimately, I believe they should be topical and relevant to SkirtCafe's mission.

Put very bluntly, from a user-interface perspective, I'd be thrilled to cull a couple of high-level categories so the entire SkirtCafe front page can be rendered on a single screen that does not require scrolling. To date, however, I have not been able to come up with a better way to do it than our previous Master Barista did -- and that is very high praise indeed.

The solution is fairly straight forward Carl... A higher resolution screen. I can see it all on my desktop with no problem (bit of a pain on my toy PC, a netbook with 1024 x 760 resolution).
To date, however, I have not been able to come up with a better way to do it than our previous Master Barista did -- and that is very high praise indeed.
What we have works well. There are sufficient categories to avoid the everything in one bucket syndrome, but not so many as to make navigation difficult.

Have fun,

Ian.

PS I would not want a jokes section here anymore than I would want a men in skirts section on a jokes forum.

Methinks the point was missed somewhat, and if I failled to communicate that accurately the blame falls squarely on me and nobody else.

Suppressing the notion of a separate "Jokes" sub-forum was not done to suppress good humour in general, for without that we are a vastly poorer bunch. It was done so as to not further clutter the landscape here at SkirtCafe.

Humour is a crucial aspect of being human, and to suppress it is to dehumanise us all. Milfmog, behind the scenes, summed it up wonderfully, and I will take the liberty of paraphrasing: "If we have a 'jokes' sub-forum on SkirtCafe, how would that correspond to a 'Men in Skirts' sub-forum on a jokes site?" There has historically been a good "give and take" here when it comes to poking fun, and so long as it is in fun that's a marvelous resource -- don't squander it! However, institutionalising it, I feel, would cheapen the discourse and exchange here.

In closing, I may be a Yank (born, bred, and have never been to the UK), but I positively adore the very dry wit that characterises Brit humour. Even before I was ravaged by the likes of Monty Python I had fond memories of the works of P.G. Wodehouse, and still get a good chuckle from revisiting those old friends on printed pages from time to time.

WODEHOUSE! You are my mate Carl.
I had a quick look at Milligan, of whom I have always been a huge fan, and have bookmarked it for further expansion!
I hope you all had a good laugh at my recent colourful fashion pic (since deleted of course!).

There is much serenity to be found on the printed page, and I occasionally take solace thereon. The best part is that batteries are not required, nor, if other forms of illumination are available, is even that modern fad of 'lectricity. Books are the original non-volatile storage medium. Accept no substitutes.

Drat! I seem to have missed it. Is it any more garish than my Halloween rig from last year?

I agree with Carl, he's welcome (from my point of view) to delete any humor he likes. Of course I thought what I started was definitely Off Topic, which is why I put in under that subject. Humor having to do WITH the topic wouldn't be "Off Topic" and I'd be confused again. Boy, humor can be soo cornfoozling. :faint: :faint: :faint: :faint:
