Norway's Gun Laws!

Post by DALederle »

Has anyone heard or seen any news media in the USA that talks about the gun laws in Norway?
Everyime there's a shooting in the USA the media runs stories all over the place about our gun laws.
So why is no one in the mass media talking about Norway's Gun Laws.
They are pretty restrictive from what I found on Google.
Didn't stop the shooter there.
My heart goes out to all the victims of senseless, to me, crimes anywhere and anytime they occure.
No one wants to talk about what really causes crime to happen. It's not an object. It's how people are taught when they are young and what they are exposed to.
Think about this:
Every abuser arrested was abused!
But not everyone who has been abused becomes and abuser.
So what's the difference?
Why do most people who have been abused grow up an avoid becoming an abuser themselves.
I don't know. I only ask questions. I have no real answers anymore.

Warning:
Politics == possible flame war
Hot button Politics == probable flame war

Lets keep it civil.

I've seen other really good people quit this forum permanently because of this topic.

As a long time proponent regarding the private ownership of small arms, I hear you.
And I have several arguments ready for the breech regarding that debate.

This topic, however, is one that I tend read/post about on other forums like...
http://www.northeastshooters.com (my favorite)
or http://www.warrifles.com, or www.ar15.com, or http://www.thehighroad.org (etc)

[Mod hat on]

I would like to second kingfish's warning in this case; topics like this -- especially considering the varying cultures we as a group hail from -- can get out of hand very quickly, and all that leads to is bad blood in the community.

As Barista, I am not interested in seeing this boil over, and if I think it's starting to I'll shut it down.

[Mod hat off]

Part of the reason that threads like this can go off the rails so quickly is that to properly interpret what's going on one needs to have an intimate understanding of the local culture. How many here understand Norwegian society well enough to draw conclusions about it? Can conclusions about a culture be drawn from one act -- no matter how horriffic? For instance, I would hope the world does not evaluate the USA based on Timothy McVeigh (for instance).

The first post was NOT intended to be a hot topic button about gun control.
It was intend to be about the media and the way it picks and choses what to focus on and allow the public to see.
Having been both a newspaper reporter and a private investigator I have struggled with being objective in everything I write. No one can be completely objective but I tried. I stoped being a reporter because the editors would re-write my stories to make them more sensational. And I would find myself being banned from goverment meetings because of the way my editor screwed up my stories.
What the media chooses to tell us is a form of censorship that they won't admit to.
When Tom held the Skirted Man March some media did cover it. But they showed and focused on the most comical aspects they could find.
It happens all the time and most people who watch TV don't even know it's going on because they see only one point of view.
People are being told how christians are bad. How married people (man and woman) are no longer the "norm" in this country. (Really?)
I would just like to see us, private individuals and especially those of us that use the internet, to begin holding the media to account for the way they control (or try to control) what we are being told.
That's all!
End of my rant!
:x

Media bias...

Post by kingfish »

I hear that.
I love the way that they periodically report on how they unbiased (etc) they are.
I find the dizzying spin on those stories particularly entertaining.

Sensationalism really is all about playing up the drama. And drama sells.
Rupert Murdoch wouldn't be the gazillionaire he is without it.
