That puts a whole new bend on "watch out for "flying fish". Night fishing in the Florida Keys frequently makes for a "many ducking" night, usually too late. Our flying fish are about a pound, dark blue and with 2 foot long wings and nearly invisible at night until they knock your head off. All the warning you get is a skittering sound as they "swim" in the air on top of the water when taking off and you still don't know what direction they are coming from. See picture.

What an amazing bit of film! I wonder under what circumstances do those massive carp engage in such jumping en masse ? Is it the season or something to do with spawning or mating?

Flying fish are dramatic enough, but as Skip says, weigh only about a pound. These carp are whoppers, and could cause considerable injury.

The fish are responding to the boat motor. They are 25-30 lb fish that can jump as high as 8 feet out of the water.
People in canoes don't encounter the jumping fish.
They are a non native species that came into the area from a ship transiting the Great Lakes.
While its funny to look at on video, its an ecological disaster as these fish are killing off native species of fish.
