Re: British Humor!!!!!!!!

Post by crfriend »

I have always adored British humour right from my first exposure to it via Monty Python's Flying Circus. Later on I went on to appreciate Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, and Yes, Minister (and its descendent, Yes, Prime Minister). I was never a big fan of Benny Hill, though; perhaps it was too much like Yank humor.

My main appreciation for the art form lies in just how deadpan British humour can be, and the way two perfectly straight-laced characters can play off against one another which is quite unlike the stereotypical American style of the straight-man and the clown. The bit about "My blackberry is frozen" was a prime example of how patently absurd things can get without necessarily going completely over the top.

There've also been cryingly funny bits which have come up from Down Under, but that may be the lingering effect of Empire. There's also some of this in the better strata of Canadian work where sometimes you're not really sure whether they're having you on or not.

Oh yes, forgot about Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, excellent. What was the other one featuring Alan B'Astard? more excellent comedy, even if it was on ITV, I suppose they had to have one decent serial!

Probably the best British comedy I have seen in a while is Misfits , although it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Sorry folks, but the series is not yet available in the US.
