Congratulations, Al, and happy birthday!

Al turned 60 today, formally closing out his sixth decade on the planet and entering his seventh. He'll complete his seventh decade when he turns 70 in 2021.

However, the latter sentiment nails the matter nicely. May you have many more!

Oh-oh! Egg on my face.
Didn't get the meaning of the 7th decade. I guess that means I'm almost over my 7th decade now. Three score and Ten are the years of man, I seem to have read somewhere.

If you're 50, you've just completed your 5th decade of life and are starting your 6th decade of life. If 60, add 10 years. Starting 7th decade of life. Count it out. You'll see. :alien:

HUH!! Dennis, please define: "the flies time". Are you discussing fly racing?

Skip:
That was an old joke! A variation on the idea that "time flies when you're having fun," with it all just turned around!
I first heard that....oh, 50 years ago.
So maybe it should have just stayed buried, instead of me bringing it back.
It was a joke about the government lab reporting they had bred a six long bug. Not knowing what to do with it they gave it a stop watch and a clip board. Which just proves that "flies time when you're having fun!"

Okay, maybe lame but I've always laughed at it!

Here's a simpler description of the decades question. I counted it out.

birth-10 = 1st decade, 10-20 = 2nd decade, 20-30 = 3rd decade, 30-40 = 4th decade, 40-50 = 5th decade, 50-60 = 6th decade, 60-70 = 7th decade, 70-80 = 8th decade etc.etc.etc.

50-60 means TO 60...not THRU 60. the 60th year is the beginning of the 7th decade. Just like birth or zero was the beginning of the 1st decade, as in 0 to 10. At your 10th birthday, you have completed ONE decade of life. Your 10th year of life is part of the 2nd decade.

I've Got to disagree with you on your decades, Skip.
The new decade starts with one not zero. THe 2nd decade of a person's life begin at 11 and goes to 20.
Everyone has been getting this wrong since they proclaimed the year 2000 as the start of the 21st century. People were in such a hurry to have a big celebration they gossed it up an entire year. The year 2000 was the LAST year of the 20th century, which is were the term 20th comes from. THe 20th century began in 1901 and ran through 2000. The 21st century began in 2001. And the first decade of that century just ended at the end of the year 2010. We are now into the 2nd decade of the 21st century with the start of the year 2011.
Dec. 31 is the end of each year. Jan. 1st is the start of the new year. You always start counting with the number one. Same thing for centuries and people's ages.
But, today, everything's being argued and in dispute one way or another.
So whatever you feel like is fine!
It doesn't make me feel any younger!

My we've got quite the molehill here, don't we!

In absolute years -- those which we measure centuries and decades with on a calendar, centuries and decades do begin with "1"; this is why 2001-01-01 was the first day of the 21st Century and why 2010-12-31 was the last day of the 20th.

However, when speaking of ages, we're talking about elapsed time. When a child is born, he's not already a year old; that happens on his (or her) first birthday, having completed one circuit around our local star. The implication of this is that when that individual reaches ten years of age, one decade of life has passed and she (or he) enters the beginning of the second decade of life. So, even though we start counting at one, the initial year of life is effectively "year zero" until the first birthday is reached (this is likely why infants are first measured in weeks of life, and then months, because it's more intuitive and solves the "zero problem").
It doesn't make me feel any younger!
Time is a wonderful teacher. It's a shame that she kills all her students.

Um no...the first year of a persons life COUNTS. After ONE year passes he is ONE year old, not zero years old. When a child is born he/she is a minute old, not a year old. He/she must LIVE that year before it counts towards his/her life. On his/her FIRST birthday he/she is ONE year old and ONE year into his/her first decade. At the end of the tenth year and his/her tenth birthday he/she is entering his/her 2nd decade. Please go Wiki/Google/American Encyclopedia this. I have...it's where I double checked my info.
The 2nd decade of a person's life begin at 11 and goes to 20
That would make a decade 9 years long. A decade is 10 years.

I've said the same thing 3 times now with the same result. It's perfectly OK to not believe me, GO LOOK IT UP. The world isn't all wrong and you're the only correct entity. I can lead a horse to water but I can't MAKE him drink. :D

Yeah,
You have to love mixing Zero offset one offset origins....
For example, me being the ripe age of 44, puts this as A.K. (anno kingfish) 45
