How old I am!

Post by DALederle »

Well, technically I'm not OLD per se, just 66. But that does make me elderly, by law of our culure and federal goverment (but what do they know?) But it occured to me today that I am older then my grandfather (he died at 59) and my mother (she died at 60) and my father (who died at 64 just before he was to retire at 65). They all died of heart attacks and I've already survived one.
But my Aunt lived to 80. Other grandparents lived to 73 (grandma) and 83 (grandpa).
So I find myself wondering just where that leaves me?
I have a growing sense of my own mortality, fostered by chronic bronchitus, which I am again suffering trough. I was hoping to retire and then begin to do many things that working for a living prevented me from doing overth years. But now it's a struggle each day just to get enough oxygen to live to another day.
And then some days I get up feeling really good and young again. I just can't find the secret to having more of those good days.
The good news is that I no longer have to respect my elders because that is me now. I am eldest of my family and friends.
I know I just rattling on. There's no great meaning to this post. I just wasting time on the computer until the CUBS game comes on.
Is anyone else feeling the "wings of angels" yet?
Or is all the rest of the world imortal?
(LOL)

I am. My dad died at 52, my mom passed at age 84, half way between those is 15½. I am 68 now and that makes me even at 67¼. Since I'm now 68, I guess I'm living on borrowed time. UNLESS I take into consideration my Grandfather who lived to 73 and my grandmother who died at 40, which puts me about 7 years into "borrowed time" country. :D :D :D Pray to whoever's in charge to PLEASE give me another 50 or more years. :D :D :D

I'm not as old as either of you, but I am also conscious that I am closer to the end of my life than the beginning.

What this is awakening in me is a desire to unload as much of my mental baggage as possible and to start living the way I want to now. One of my standard explanations of why I wear skirts in my free time is that I've always kind of wanted to, and since it won't be all that much longer before I'm dead and can't do any of the stuff I've always wanted to do, I might as well start now. (A.k.a. the "bucket list" explanation.)

Actually, that give me an idea: maybe I need to actually make a real "bucket list." It might motivate me to get off the dime in a lot of other ways.

The Chicago Cubs? The Snatch-Defeat-From-The-Jaws-Of-Victory Cubs? No wonder you feel so old and discouraged!

1st: GO CUBS!!! i got to shake ernie banks hand one day at wrigley, leaning over towards the dugout.

2nd: currently i'm 51, so the road ahead is shorter than the one behind.

3rd: absolutely NO fear of dying, so long as it isn't long/drawn out/muy painful/at a ridiculously old age

4th: medical science has said for awhile now that a person in america under the age of 55 can reasonably expect a 100-year (or greater) lifetime, due to advances in healthcare and the rapidly-increasing list of "fatal" diseases that can be successfully treated. that means you're gonna be using up social security sooner, because old folks are dying older. that means a lot of RELLY old folks fighting for jobs, because they ain't got the goverment to pay for them

ja, i can see me now. 110 years old, trying to be a wally-mart greeter. in a skirt. getting canned because i growled at some arrogant teenager.

i'd rather bite down on the dentist's drill!

somebody take me out back and shoot me now!

i need a drink...
you know... george orwell warned us!

I would rather not count the time passing by - I just have no desire to know what happens when the clock runs out.
No matter my pain or troubles leaving this life is not what I wish to do.
