To all - - -

May we reflect on the blessings we’ve received and
those yet to come.

May the spirit of Christmas fill our hearts with love

this is NOT me being an @$$...

i love the speech given by ebenezar scrooge BEFORE he's redeemed by the spirits. it shows the depth his soul had shrunk to. however, it needs to be complete in order to show this:

"i wish that every man that walked about the holiday season with the words "HAPPY CHRISTMAS!" on his lips should be boiled in his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. christmas is a humbug. bah, humbug!"
charles dickens, "a christmas carol"

the presents are almost meaningless (now that i'm older), but having my sons, daughter-in-law, and soon-to-be daughter-in-law ALL here at once cannot help but put a smile upon my face.

i will recommend a movie for the holidays, it has a lot to offer: "merry christmas, mr lawrence".

enjoy, all!

I thought it was "MERRY CHRISTMAS" and Happy Birthday or Happy Thanksgiving?? Merry like the merry red cheeks of Santa Claus...There are no Holly trees down here to get a stake from and the only pudding I know of is Tapioca 6 packs from Winn Dixie. By the way, what IS a humbug anyway? :?:

"happy christmas" was the standard phrase until around the turn of the 20th century, when it changed to merry christmas (don't know why).

the pudding in dickens' day would probably have been a figgy pudding, which was served fresh from the oven. still piping hot, or at least warm. i've read several accounts of "serving the pudding before it cools" in older writing.

a humbug? well, according to merriam-webster's online dictionary (and several others) a humbug is:
1 a : something designed to deceive and mislead b : a willfully false, deceptive, or insincere person
2 : an attitude or spirit of pretense and deception

and holly trees in florida? according to http://www.floridata.com/lists/trees.cfm there are 6 different breeds of holly native to florida.

incidently, "a christmas carol" was just one of a series of stories that dickens wrote for a popular magazine, that although they were popular, he began to loathe wring them as they were part of a contract that he couldn't get out of.

steven king wrote the "green mile" chapters in a style imitative of dickens, and professed it was excessively stressful to write in this manner.

just some literary historical trivia

Thank you, I loved the Green Mile movie and Michael Clarke Duncan's acting in it. That was the first movie I ever saw with Sam Rockwell in it. He sure can play a baddie well. They must have had trenches all over the sets for the normal sized actors to walk in so Duncan looked so much taller than all the guards, including James Cromwell and David Morse, both of whom are taller than Duncan in real life. Of course Doug Hutchinson's character was a role you could really sink your teeth into if you liked playing "nasty "young" good old boys".

That's ultimately what it's all about anyway -- companionship and camaraderie with one's fellow humans during the darkest time of the year.

Sapphire and I celebrate the seasons, and this time 'round we had a wonderful dinner with our friends from next door and tonight we're headed off to our "local establishment's" holiday party. So, despite neither one of us having enough family to fill a flagon we're not exactly lonely.

No matter what you celebrate this time of year, please accept good wishes from this cantankerous old fart, and sincere hopes for health and prosperity in the new year.

I love Christmas, but wish we could keep it to just three days; Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The thing that gets to me is the three month run up to the “festering season”, during which there are long periods when I feel exactly like Ebenezer Scrooge.

However it is Christmas Eve and there is snow on the ground outside, so even I am starting to feel the approach of Christmas now and am able to offer season’s greetings with sincerity.

So I wish everyone here at the Café
a very merry Christmas and a great 2010.

Have fun,

Ian.

It's been a rather peculiar Christmas for me. As you may know, I've been on a diet since last April and have lost 82 pounds to today. My next door neighbor came over day before yesterday with 2 plates of food for me for Christmas dinner. I graciously accepted and gave her a slight lie in response, telling her I'd just eaten and would eat it all later. After she left and I looked inside the tin foil, I saw about a quarter pound of sliced white turkey, a half pound of home made mashed potatoes, A baked Yam and a mound of peas, carrots and corn. About a quarter pound of fresh baked cornbread was in there too. In the OTHER dish, a huge slice of Pumpkin pie and a similar sized slice of Pecan Pie resided.

The next morning, I drove down to the corner by the biggest lounge in town, where our town's homeless are, I took a half dozen paper plates and shared both dishes of food among them. I didn't eat any of it. As wonderful as it all looked, all I could see, looking at them was pounds ON and not OFF.

The next day, she showed up for her empty dishes and gave me a tureen of green pea soup with ham and another slice of Pecan pie. Later in the afternoon, it was off to the lounge again and with a half dozen paper bowls spread it all among the less fortunate than me.
Today around 3 in the afternoon she called me on the phone and asked me if I'd like some left over turkey and mashies...I talked her out of it. Told her about my diet and said I couldn't keep breaking it or I'd gain it all back. That satisfied her and hopefully, she'll just cook for her husband and not me. I feel so proud of myself for not breaking my resolve. :D :D :D

Wow !!! Food is the hardest thing to control since we have to eat some to keep moving around. You really did yourself proud on that one, Skip.

I have always been just a little heavier than I should be and some of my life was a lot more and I have a terrible time keeping my hands off good tasting stuff. It was actually easy to give up a 25 year smoking habit cold turkey. DARN, there's that food again..........
