A Question
I'm pretty sure most people came here because, for whatever reason, they wore or wanted to wear, skirts and kilts etc. and they would find like-minded people here. Obvious? Well, no, that wasn't what happened in my case.
I had never really thought much about the possibilities of men wearing skirts until I came here - or rather, before I accidentally tuned in to Tom's Cafe a decade or so ago. At first, I was extremely skeptical - in fact, I thought the whole idea was nuts! Skirts are for women, I thought, men look stupid wearing them and besides, they are entirely impractical. Also, we are seeing fewer and fewer women wearing skirts, so it's only a matter of time before they join togas and pantaloons and become historical garments only with no place in the modern world. I expressed these views quite forcefully - some people probably thought I was just a troll, but if they did they have been proved wrong.
A few friends here tried to persuade me to try a skirt, along with my own wife and eldest daughter. Eventually I did. I bought a plain red one from a High Street shop called Next and tried it for a whole afternoon. I must have looked a pretty sight with my beard (that I used to have), wearing a calf-length skirt while puffing on my pipe. But I did it and at first it just didn't feel right. I felt a dope. Later on I tried sarongs and suddenly the pleasure of the unbifurcated garment began to dawn on me! I haven't looked back since then and now I own about 20 sarongs and skirts of various styles and colours - garments which I always team with masculine attire so I would never look remotely effeminate. Furthermore, I am bold when I wear a skirt - I try garments on in the shops before I buy and never pretend the items are for someone else. I wear skirts to all sorts of occasions and in my daily life - they are just a normal part of my wardrobe now. I have even introduced a handful of other men to this way of dressing with varying degrees of success.
I was wondering if I were the only person here who came to skirt-wearing as a result of coming here?

Re: A Question
For me, not quite. I'd been teetering on the brink of skirt wearing, and Tom's Cafe back in 2002 gave me the push required to go over the edge. I haven't looked back since (excuse the mixture of metaphorsStu wrote:I was wondering if I were the only person here who came to skirt-wearing as a result of coming here?Stu

If I want to dress like a woman, I'll wear jeans.

Re: A Question
Actually, I always felt attracted to skirts, etc., but never did anything about it.Stu wrote:I was wondering if I were the only person here who came to skirt-wearing as a result of coming here?
I started actually wearing skirts (as opposed to fantasizing about it) because I saw other guys wearing skirts at Contra dances, and the sky didn't fall on them.
After I started trying out skirts at dances, I then did many, many web searches with phrases like "men in skirts", and eventually ran across Tom's Cafe.
I still do most of my skirt-wearing in Contra dancing circles, as I have the most trust that they will accept even the craziest stuff I feel like trying. (Though some of the women feel compelled to give me fashion advice

Bob -- for what it's worth, if I Google "Men in skirts" (without quotes), SkirtCafe does not come up. Did you ever get the indexing stuff working?

My best recollection is that my first real introduction to American males wearing skirts (aside from the occasional 'hippie' and such) was at Lark Camp when my wife, daughter and I saw our first Utilikilt.
I honestly cannot remember how I found this place, but I'm sure it must have been from either the UK site or from a web search.
Perhaps I recounted the tale back at Tom's and it is still in the archives dusty and buried deeply.
Although I have donned the TG title for the time being, I can honestly say that I truly believe men should wear skirts.
When I'm wearing a skirt, I am not donning it for TG reasons... rather I am just being free and comfortable.
I have never visited the 'other' men-in-skirts websites so I can say that this place was the first and only major influence on my wearing skirts in public.
Thanks to Tom, Noodles, Bob and the rest of the whole motley crew!
