A nice comment...

Post by Kilted Musician »

Last Sunday afternoon, I played a job with a band and wore my black Utilikilt. I was supposed to wear white pants [which I had with me] but getting there 7 minutes before we were supposed to start didn't give me much time to change. I was wearing a dark blue t-shirt, kilt, and sandals. I asked the leader, considering the time left before we start playing, if he wanted me to change or is it ok just wear the kilt. He never gave me an answer so I wore the kilt. His wife handed me the "band shirt," a Hawaiian print shirt. Anyway...

On our break, this elderly lady comes up to me and says, "Are you wearing a kilt or a skirt?" I smiled and told her it's a cotton kilt made by a company called Utilikilts. She said, with a smile, "That skirt looks very nice on you. Men should wear skirts more. After all... the women are wearing the pants!" She kept calling it a skirt, which is fine with me! :) She also said I've got the hair for it, too [a 12" ponytail]! I wanted to talk more with her but we had to start playing the second set.

Her comments made my somewhat hectic day very pleasureable!

i remember once in ukraine we saw a concert where the guitarist wore a long-ish kilt (by my standards). anyway, the audience was in more shock from that than if he'd set light to the auditorium! their mouths hung open and they just couldn't take their eyes off this guy, and it sure wasn't down to his playing!

On hair. Or off it -- reader's choice.

That's one of the nice things about hair -- it grows if you eschew trims/cuts.

Ah-ha! A shorty! :D I have a nice little two-footer. Of course it took me bloomin' years to grow it out and now I'm getting thin up top so it looks like I've got a fast-train ticket to skullet-ville. {whimper}

All joking aside, long hair is so under-appreciated on men, and that's a shame because it can look really good.

Currently about 12" here too. Long enough that it tends to get caught between my back and the backrest of the driver's seat... Usually have to high-tail it, then let the 'tail go over the head restraint, instead of letting it be between that and the head itself. Can't stand short hair...

Most of my gigs are in coffeehouses [where just about anything goes concerning clothes] and restaurants. If I play a gig wearing pants, quite often the other band members will ask me if there's anything wrong because I'm not wearing my kilt! :)

In my opinion, most guys look good with long hair. I've always liked long hair and in March of '04, just decided no more haircuts! Prior to that, I'd get a haircut once a year. My boss is cool with it. As long as it looks neat. At work I keep it ponytailed primarily because it's easier to do my work. Here's a few pics, front and back, taken around March of '06...

I'll get some kilt pics posted soon.

...I think the working word there is "I"...which infers "choice". Hence only a rubbing in if one is sensitive about his personal choice. :)

I can understand that completely. Mine kept getting caught between my back and the back of the couch. One day when it was really hot and muggy and it got caught I had enough. I went into the kitchen, grabbed the scissors and cut it off! I DO get real crabby in the heat. Hear that Skip? :)

Heh, when it's hot, it goes into a bun. I become dysfunctional when it's hot.

I think we ALL become a bit crabby, grumpy and dysfunctional in excess heat.:naughty:

All that hair....

That's part of the human condition. That given, I'm not willing to trade five years of growth for an instant of discomfort; I'll figure out somewhere else to place my ponytail. But then again, I can't imagine myself with anything other than waist-length hair.

In any event, to each his own; it's one of the things that makes us what we are. We should celebrate that notion.

One sign of a true longhair... when you don't mind putting up with the little inconveniences of long hair, hair in your face, tangles, etc. I'll gladly put up with things like that!

Rick & Carl,

Exactly. Got stuck with shorthair for a while in 2004, but, it grew back and I'm not cutting it again. Just looks better long. Sure, there are times when I'm working on a car that I wish it wouldn't keep dropping into my face, but I deal with it.
