FIDE (Int'l Chess Fed) dress code

Post by Hayseed »

Recently, Magnus Carlson, the highest rated chess player in the world was disqualified from the World Rapid Chess Championships for violating the new FIDE dress code. It seems he wore a pair of blue jeans!

The dress code, as you can probably guess, is not gender neutral. Skirts and dresses are okay for girls and women, but not for men.

I'm not sure what they would do with those who "self identify" as women. Could they wear a skirt? And what about a natural born female who "self identifies" as male. Could that person wear a skirt?

These dress codes, especially when combined with other woke elements, land one in a heap of absurdities.

The FIDE dress code applies (for the moment anyway) only to top level events. I think I might wear a skirt to one of the upcoming tournaments here in S.D., if for no other reason, than to let folks know that we are here.

I don’t see how this works in an international tournament. I mean what happens when an Arabian gentleman and an Indian gentleman get to the top? Are they made to wear a western suit?
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

Given it was Magnus the "rule" got modified very quickly -- he was back in his typical jeans the next day; but yes, it was a silly item and a 'wake up' about the whole notion of dress codes. I've not heard of any challenge nor much enforcement in most chess venues. More oft the complaint is the typical male frustration with some of women's outfits being a distraction in the open tournaments; or the coffee-house chess if you watch any of the 'trash talking' YouTube chess content. I've not played any official FIDE rated tournaments for a LONG time but I do teach some mini-chess courses at our local schools -- in a skirt; and nary a problem.
