Roseanne casually includes boy wearing skirts

Post by skirted84 »

Its an old sitcom and the reboot is also a few years old, but as refreshing as ever. It includes a character Mark, clearly a confident straight cisgender boy wearing "girls" clothes like its the most normal thing. Haven't watched the sitcom at great length but from what I've seen its the perfect example of the "no big deal" we have been yearning for. Just carries on with home, school and social life in a skirt.

Other examples of casually showing males in skirts would be welcome. We need this to be more commonplace with males whatever age, context. Even acting roles can have an impact on real life views.

No big deal as long as we remember they are girls clothes!
We are a long way from where we are and where want to be.
It's no use being negative though so it's good that Rosanne tackled the subject.

I haven't seen it myself, but it sounds like in recent seasons they had him "grow out of" wearing skirts/dresses and is now just kind of quirky.

I was disappointed when that character, Mark, got written into the gay stereotype, in addition to moving him out of his skirts.

They had a number of good episodes, like when he got screwed over by political correctness gone too far at his school Halloween party.
His Frida Kahlo cosplay was spot on, only to have the principal boot him from the party for "cultural appropriation".
I can only imagine the creative joy the costume and makeup departments had doing that episode.

Who in Hollywood is going to do anything at all with a straight male character? We're boring, normal, and unremarkable. Hardly food for controversy, comedy, or anything else splashy. This is one of the reasons that the needle is moving so slowly for MIS. Each and every time a guy gets portrayed wearing anything other than The Uniform there's always the explicit commentary of, "Oh, he must be {insert abomination here}!" That is not helpful to our cause.

I think it's telling when a character gets written into a "gay" stereotype while simultaneously getting written out of skirts.

But... but... I thought skirts were gay! [/sarcasm]

True that.
And non-controversial characters don't get people to tune in "to see what they'll do next".

That's part of the point. We should be remembered by the quality of our deeds and not what we clothe ourselves in. (If that sounds vaguely familiar, it should!)

I was actually a bit stunned this evening in my local when a relative of another "regular" at my local haunt -- who was up from New Jersey to check in on her sister who is in hospital at the moment as a result of a very bad case of influenza -- who sought me out, likely by description, introduced herself, and informed me of the news. I was aghast at it, and requested that she pass along my best to her sister. She mentioned that she absolutely would. I hope to see Elaine again, she's fun, witty, and intelligent. The world needs more like her, 'Tis a pity we're all an endangered species now. And it was not by attire I was recognised -- it was by observation of my behaviour and interaction with others. My skirt was completely hidden when I was approached. This is how we should be remembered!
