How do you approach tops?

Post by Chip »

Has anyone found a standard length shirt that works well with skirts? Or do you go fitted, baggy, etc?

I realized that most of my tops are now very fitted, some short/crop, with the exception of a few baggy tops. And almost exclusively women's.

I wrote an article on this topic and did a before/after photoshoot to show why fitted tops are generally the way to go - any feedback/ideas appreciated: https://everybodyskirts.com/blogs/posts/fitted-tops

Generally women's shirts are shorter for the otherwise same fit but difficult to get in plain colours with acceptable necklines or collars.
I prefer shirts not tucked in if they are short enough, covering no more that the belt loops of a mini skirt. I won't wear shirts cropped too short showing any bare belly, although I think that it can look OK on other's that are not too hairy.
Most men's shirts are too long and can look out of proportion if not tucked in and are a problem with mini skirts whether tucked in or not.

Same – I don't mind the tucked look but almost never do, because I can't move my torso around comfortably, unless the shirt is pulled out and overhanging a lot, in which case I don't like the look.

Agree with you – though if the shirt is baggy/long enough, I actually like the look, especially with mini skirts, and it covers the bulge too, ie. the top image here: https://everybodyskirts.com/blogs/posts/baggy-tops

I have two main looks for my top. I mainly rock T-Shirts which are quite loose, but tucked in. Occasionally, with certain skirts, when not at work and in hot weather they will be un tucked.

My other look is a tight fitting leotard which gives me very fitted top tucked in. This comes from my love lycra clothing that the girls got to wear when I was a kid.

I do have a dress, which is basically a long tight T-shirt. Of course, living in the UK, a jacket or fleece of some description is normally in play, which obviously covers most of whatever top you have on.

My picture area http://www.skirtcafe.org/forums/viewtop ... 86#p256986 shows my current range of outfits which I where daily.

I wear fitted (but not tight) tops with skirts. I think the lines are cleaner and it looks less sloppy. I do think a long shirt can work as you've shown n your last pic. I wear a mix of men's / women's - just depends on what I can get in a particular pattern and size.

As a teen I wore a boy's/men's large, but nowadays if buying men's shirts I'll go with a small. A L was usually very very - comically - baggy - with a medium being more to size with regular jeans... but even the mediums seem too big with skirts.

I find the opposite. With a skirt, I can find a suitable top such as a man's formal shirt, a T shirt (long or short sleeves), with or without a waistcoat/vest or overshirt, a jacket, etc. The top half of a dress is much more likely to be cut for the accommodation of boobage which I do not possess, and I have much greater difficulty finding a dress that works properly for the male figure.

I spend most of my time in dresses so not a daily challenge. I have several different approaches depending on the style of the skirt:
a) fitted blouse worn outside skirt - with pencil skirt - lack of boobs does not matter
b) loose blouse worn outside skirt or inside it with belt - usually with long flared full skirt
c) stretch long-sleeved top or short-sleeved top with moderate cling worn outside skirt
d) tunic top with asymmetric hem worn outside skirt

I can only speak for the sort of skirts I wear. Straight or straightish can be any length but full skirts have to be minimum 35". A short or knee length flared skirt does not work on me. I have been known to wear a cardigan or a jumper over a blouse. I avoid close-fitting turtle necks but cowl necks are fine. Or I might wear a short jacket over the top.

I have had a colour and style consultation for menswear and womenswear and the feedback was invaluable - it does not necessarily transfer to other men though. I have the advantage of an inverted triangle upper body that looks good in dresses and certain types of skirt. I have been told I look better in these clothes than in conventional men's clothes but thanks to the style consultation I do them reasonably well too.

There are also huge advantages in going up market - nicer clothes hang better. I look on it as a hobby. A really good skirt/top or dress is cheaper than a round of golf and lasts longer.

I must admit that I have never given much thought to tops. Mine are, without exception, from the men's section and whatever kind I think they fit me, whether tucked in or untucked, or worn with kilts, other skirts, jeans or shorts. They are slim or regular fit.
By the way, I never ever wear a vest/waist coat. Cultural aspect, I think.

There ARE viable alternatives to trousers.

Jordan it is just as difficult to find the right top as it is to find the right skirt. I am constantly striving to find a natural look. Something that for me at least is quite difficult when societies attitudes are so deeply embedded.
For me tucked in looks the best, providing neater division. If only I had a flat stomach! The protuding belly brings me back to loose tops, mostly tees or polo shirts.
For those or us without a six pack I think polo's and short sleeve shirts are the best.

Not being a Mod, I can set as bad an example as I dare.
Jack W. and Chip 82 RIP, would be proud of my irreverence I think.
Personally, it's healthy, sometimes we are inclined to take ourselves a tad too seriously.

This is what my tight fitted top looks like. It is actually a leotard and so the stretch is two way and always tucked in what ever you do.

I wear a wide variety of tops, from traditional masculine to fairly feminine. Like bottoms, I don't worry about what sex they are marketed to. During the summer I am frequently topfree and strongly support the right for women to do the same.
