I wanted to get a Ham (Amateur Radio) License when I was a teen - but never got to learning the Morse Code that was needed way back then. I regained my interest a few months ago and signed up for an online course - studied about halfway through it and then was "distracted" with another old hobby being brought to the forefront by my wife. So, for now, I am immersed in the new (old) hobby and the Ham License is (again) on the back burner.

So, maybe next winter...I'll get back to it...

Ive been licenses since I was a kid. 40+ years now.

Today: 750K licenses ham in the USA today.
No Morse code requirements and radio cost are cheap.
Basic simple Ham Radio, 2m 70cm, can be had for > $25 and the license can be had reasonably quickly.
My first radio was a Yaesu 2M HT I was like $300 in 1982 I bought it new at the hamfest just 30 minutes after taking my upgrade exam to Technician from Novice.

My radio club has a weekend License Course Saturday Class and Sunday Exam where most people walk out the door with a Completed Test waiting on the FCC to assign a call sign which takes a few days now.

In the past at major Hamfest we have done one day licensing, the FCC had a person on duty to assign a call Sign as we summitted completed test.

I earned my Amateur Extra license back in 2022 January but haven't done much since then. My call sign is AI5FV. I took the tests for all three levels (Technician, General, and Amateur Extra) all at once. It helps for me to have a BSEE.

Are you sure about that, SD? I'm also a G8, though inactive; and it's been my understanding that the licence is still valid even though Ofcom no longer wants to collect the fees.

Yes, assuming it hasn't changed recently. Mine elapsed one year before the automatic renewal, which was quite a while ago. I can renew it for a small fee, but have to prove I am entitled to the licence. Thereafter renewal is free.

They're both current.

I got my license as part of the amateur radio society at what was Hatfield Polytechnic. Then hadn't touched it since. About a year ago I looked up the current situation and renewed, got a small handheld radio and promptly haven't touched it again since. Had never forgotten my call sign is G7EAK but not much use if I don't even find what I did with the radio, turn it on and possibly even transmit...
