Skirts and a large waist
Skirts and a large waist
Hello everyone,
I have issues with words, please bear with me.
I know that I need to lose some weight as I have a 44 inch waist and that my kilt is based on my waist size.
I will be looking into a skirt where the length is below the knees and above the ankle. With that being said, with my current waist size, should I look for a skirt that sits at the waist or below using a belt?
Thank you for your suggestions and feedback.

Re: Skirts and a large waist
This is going to depend primarily on what your own personal geometry is, and how your dimensions work.
It's always better to work with your geometry than against it, and whether you can hang a skirt from your hips or need to force it somewhere else with a belt is down to physics. If you have hips that present a wider spot than your waist, then you have the option of hanging a skirt from there. If you're more "rotund" you will likely be better off keeping a skirt fastened near the waist using a belt, or even classic men's braces (which alleviate a lot of other worries).
Good luck in your new quest!

Thank you for the information - It looks like I will need to hang the skirt from the waist.
If a skirt does not have any pockets, how would one carry their wallet?
Edit: And keys.

Easy! Carry a bag. The skirt will attract all the attention and the bag will likely go unnoticed. At least that's what I do.

Or add pockets, side seam pockets are easy to add to most skirts

Re: Skirts and a large waist
I need to lose weight too and I am the same waist size as you. When I buy skirts at 44 waist they are a size 18 to 20 and they are pleated and have a stretchy waist band so they fit my waist too. The skirt fits comfortably over my hips and waist. I usually have to wear my skirt over my hips because I want the length down to my knees but if I want it shorter I wear over my waist. When I buy dresses I go for a size 24 which fits me perfect and I bought a pinafore dress with a pocket at the bust for my iPhone and wallet.

Wearing a skirt at the waist, or the hips
I'm 6' 2" tall and wear my skirts(and kilts) at my natural waist(at my belly-button). My hips have
a smaller dimention(43") than my waist(46") and I always, well, 90% of the time, use a belt to hold
them up. 24" to 26" length will place the hem at mid-knee, to just below the knee. I have some
longer skirts but use them for cooler weather. I have some shorter skirts and use them when I'm
doing yard work. A skirt at 24" to 26", when bending over, will not show tomorrows laundry.
When wearing a 'colorful' skirt, I wear a plain/single color(usually white) button-up shirt.
If I'm wearing a plaid or colorful shirt, I stick with a plain black skirt.
No one will notice your hip size when wearing a skirt at the waist as your hips are hidden from view.
Pockets
I have several skirts(and casual dresses) that have pockets. They come in handy.
The draw back is elastic waists. If your pockets are 'loaded' the skirt tends to slip-DOWN.
That is one of the reasons I use a belt. A belt keeps the skirt in place versus on the floor.
My casual dresses, no worries. They are suspended from the shoulders and won't go 'south' on you.
Just my $.02 worth

Re: Skirts and a large waist
Hi everyone! Thank you for all the information and suggestions as they really help a lot. I ended up hanging a skirt from my 44 inch waist. I will take a look for a skirt with an elastic waist with a belt. Suspenders look like a good option, too.
Well, I did it! I have a size 20 black midi skirt (Calvin Klein) with a blue polo that I wore out in public yesterday for the first time! Though I had a few strange looks, what really made my day was that I received two compliments, one from a woman, and the other a man. The swoosh, the air moving and how the fabric felt was very nice. Though I have worn my utility kilts for a few years during the warm weather, doing so made it easier to wear a "skirt."
I was self-conscience yesterday and yet thrilled at the same time. Skirting will build my confidence, too.
I had not thought of this before, what I can do is wear a sporran with the skirt.
I have another question. If a skirt is not fully opaque, what would I wear underneath it for modesty purposes?

Re: Skirts and a large waist
That'd be a slip, and those also help if one is wearing legwear as the legwear can pick on some fabrics and make things hang awkwardly.

Re: Skirts and a large waist
I was going to say don’t wear a short skirt with suspenders until I realised you are probably from the other side of the Atlantic and mean what we call over here in the UK braises and not suspenders as in stockings and garters.
Braises (suspenders) will look good with a skirt and I sometimes wear them for style.

Yes, I am from the other side of the Atlantic.
Braises sounds and spells a bit different than what I have seen before for plural tense. I am used to seeing the word braces.
Thank you, I was not aware of the spelling and I looked up the differences between braces and suspenders - braces use buttons where suspenders use clips (over the shoulders.)
