Re: Hemming skirts
Hemming is much more resourceful than hawing about the task !
The new sewing machines now do twice the stitching than the ole ones.
A serger even does more finishing and trimming the hem all at once.
Congrats on making the next step to your sewing activities !

"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

Re: Hemming skirts
It's hard to fine a skirt that is the right length for me, that would be between 18 1/2 to 20 inches

That's an awfully limiting range. Offhand, I'd suggest getting out of your usual "comfort zone" to see what else might work or tickle your fancy.

Yes a new sewing machine would be handy, I have numerous old ones including heavy duty items but none that can do a stitch suitable for stretchy materials.
I also have a limited range in skirt lengths and have tried to get out of (or expand) my comfort zone at times (going longer) but oddly enough it did not look or feel right for me.

Yes Carl in do have skirts that's longer that I wear in the late fall, winter and early spring. I wear angle length for then and the shorter one's are for summer. I'm 71 years young and am quite active around the 18 acres that I live on with taking care of cows, chickens, fruit trees, nut trees and vegetable garden plus I do contract welding for a large aggregate company ( in jeans and long sleeve shirt).

Big thumbs-up on that count! Perfect.
Most wise. UV burns and thermal burns suck..[...] plus I do contract welding for a large aggregate company ( in jeans and long sleeve shirt).
