Mind Blow

Post by moonshadow »

Why is it called "a pair of pants/trousers", when it's one garment?

I can understand that there is a tube for each leg, but still, it's "joined at the hip" (HA!) Thus ONE garment!

A pair of pants is one garment, yet a pair of skirts is two!

WHOA!

Would a pair of skirts have to match to qualify as a pair?

If you put one on each leg would it then be a unified "pair" of trousers?

If you stiched an inseam in a single skirt... is it now a pair of skirts? Yet still, one garment?

*pooof*!

It's a good thing I don't have any more beer on-board than I already do, else I would have risen (sunk?) to that challenge for humorous imagery, albeit delivered in prose.

Only as a Court Jester for his Royal what's his name - the Emperor with the invisible wardrobe !

Side note it would be interesting to see how the country hicks down in Redneck country would treat this.
Bad enough they can't figure out what to do with the transgender porta pottys ! LOL !
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

Humm.... one legged pants.. er uh... a pant.

Surprised nobody has tried to get that to catch on yet... Wonder if they would still be referred to as a "pair".

Or is a one legged pant really a skirt?

If I only put a skirt on one leg is it now a pant?

That's something like saying, "Think I'll go to the store and buy some groceries." Have you ever said, "Think I'll go to the store and buy a grocery." Probably not. You can't buy only one. Gotta buy at least 2. By the way... what IS a grocery?

Interesting.... never really thought of it, it's also strange that we do not call a store that sells groceries a "groceries store", rather we call it a "grocery store"

In addition, the part of a grocery store where the non-perishables are displayed is considered simply "dry grocery", not "dry groceries".

To try and tie this thread into the real world a pant was a one-legged garment and you had one for each leg and tied each around the waist with a cord. Then someone in the 16th century had the bright idea of sewing them together and pants were invented. That's why we say a pair of pants.

The grocery issue is a tad more difficult as a grocery is actually the store that sells groceries, defined as items of food. Thus there isn't a single item of food called a grocery. The vagaries of English.

Oh you're no fun!

So why a pair of trousers? Was a trouser a one legged garment as well?

Then there is the Jean, or the tight, Sorry I'll stop, this is getting boring.

Yes, that is my understanding of the origin. similar to a pair of scissors or a pair of glasses (specs). Funny, a skort misses out where a pair of shorts doesn't, no doubt from their origins; one from two short pantaloons being joined at the hip and the other by adding an inseam (or adding a pair of shorts) to a single garment. Oh the mind runs wild.

That is dividing one object, where pair of pants is combining two. .......... I think

But it's called a grocery store. So if a grocery is a store that sells groceries, and I go to a grocery store, then when I enter said grocery store to purchase groceries, then I am purchasing many stores that sell groceries, all which sell groceries, which sell groceries?

Oh man... this is making my head hurt!

I Google Grocery to see what they say. According to Google, a grocery is a grocer's business. A grocer is one who sells food items and small household goods. So... if you went to the store to buy some groceries, you'd be buying more than one business!

I give up, this thread started insane and hasn't improved any through the postings. Sometimes it's better to join the inmates than to try and edjukate them. Just to join in the fun how come the majority of folks wear trainers when they never do any training or running or any other form of exercise?
