Dry, or Wet, January?

Post by DonaldG »

Here in the UK a tradition has developed over the last few years that after the excesses of the Festive Season we should abstain from alcohol for the month of January. It's got to the point where about three-quarters of the population now obey this 'rule'. Ugh!

As a reaction against the ridiculous fad that is being labelled as “Dry January”, I have created a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/WetJanuary/ for those of us who have no office parties to go to, and for whom Christmas dinner is just like any other, and eaten alone or in the company of only one's partner. On this page we can share ideas, events and activities for a “wet January”.

I vote for wet. We're old enough to have a few drinks in the evening if we please.
As a matter of fact, the sun DOES shine out of my ...

'Round here... beer always sells, regardless of the month. I'm not much for beer, I do like a little wine now and then, but I really only do so just a few times per year.

But I work in retail, and when you work in the retail world, you drink to the holidays finally being OVER! January is when we finally get to let our hair down!

No Way!

I never drink to excess at home and I usually drive to where we're celebrating with others, therefore a single drink taken early on in the evening suffices. I totally loathe the sensation of imminent drunkenness, so alcohol intake for me and MOH is always limited. I can perfectly well enjoy a long evening just sipping soft drinks. This makes facing the boys in blue out on the road with their little bags in the small hours a confident exercise.

When staying over, e.g. in a hotel I'll enjoy a couple of pints with anyone, but that's quite enough. At parties I'm more often than not required to 'perform' musically, so I have soft drinks up to that point and hit the harder stuff afterwards. I do enjoy a good Malt by the fireside in male company late in the evening, but only then.

So for me, January is like any other month.

It is bad enough being obliged to "have fun"at the end of December. Being obliged to stop drinking (or whatever) the following month too?
No; many of us are sheep and follow the herd, but I am NOT one.

Dry January? I think not. I rarely over indulge but I have a habit of 2 drinks in the early evening as a smoke my pipe. I doubt I'll change with the calendar,
