Sir Cumpherence: My Music Project

Post by Departed Member »

I've seen a number of musically themed threads in this section of the forum, and I'd thought I'd take a moment to introduce y'all to my own musical project I've been working on for quite a while now. Basically, I compose songs in various genres, but especially in the Jamaican Ska and Reggae vein, as well as in the Surf Rock vein, too. There's also a lot of Latin influence in there are well. However, I record my songs a little contrary to the standard process. I do it all using the Mac program "Garageband." I usually record the guitar and some percussion live in real time, and then put in by hand the percussive rhythm/drums, the horns, piano, and other instruments in the songs.
It's not anything professional, but it sounds pretty darn good for just computer work on Garageband. Anyway, perhaps you'll enjoy of the clips I've put up of my original compositions on the following link:

Let me know your thoughts and opinions-constructive criticism welcome, too.

Interesting compositions. A little like Dick Dale meets Robert Moog meets SuperMario.

Thank you John and Dillon! I appreciate the comments and compliments!

Dick Dale is definitely a huge influence on me Surf music-wise, more so than the other styles of Surf like the Belairs and other such bands. I like these other Surf style bands, but Dick Dale, the Astronauts, the Original Surfaris, all of them incorporating the very heavy reverb tremolo picking on guitar catches my attention more.

Super Mario is also a big influence on me as well, growing up playing it as I did, on all its incarnations. I even rescued the princess on the original Marion when I was 5. Anyway, I've even done some ska covers of old Mario songs, but haven't uploaded those to UT for copyright reasons. I think one of my dream jobs would be to write music for Nintendo video games.

My influences are various, as you've caught, Dillon.

I'd also like to add that I listened to all the selections. They've got quite the range, but I'd have to say that my favourites were "Back to the Moon", "Thermocline", and "White Cap Stomp" in no particular order. "Helping Hands" is also a gem, even if it is but a fragment.

Nicely done!

It's interesting that so many would say my songs remind them of The Shadows. While I know of The Shadows and have heard several of their tunes before, and love "Apache," they have never really been a big influence on me. The Ventures and Tornadoes have, however, The Tornadoes being British, Ventures American. And the Tornadoes, Ventures, and Shadows are all fairly similar in being instrumental bands that all got caught up in the instrumental Surf Rock craze in the early 60s, which is a big influence on me. So while I never really listened to the Shadows much, their counterparts definitely influenced me, so, I can see how someone would hear hints of The Shadows in my tunes.

Thanks again all for the comments and compliments! It's always good to know one's work is appreciated.
