Men's Sulu on amazon

Post by wsherman »

Good-day!

I was shopping amazon.com the other day an happened to take a look for a mem's Sulu and to my plesant surprise the search turned the garment up! It is the Fijian tailored Sulu with inset slash pockets and is available in brown and black. I ordered the brown one and recieved it on thursday last. I am pleased with the item the fit is good and the consturction is sound. The buvckle is the only thing I was dissappointed with as it failed right away but I found a way around by subsistuting snaps in place of the drawstring closure.. The sulu is about 28 inches long and so comes to about three or for inches aabove my ankles on my 5 foot 7 inche frame. There is a very good overlap left to right.

The Mens Sulu is also available from http://www.1worldsarongs.com . They have been selling exscluively sellingit on order to Fiji and are now making it available generally from their site. It is currently only being produced in black and brown but hopefully will soon be offered in other colors.

Hope this is helpful.

Any particular reason you didn't share the Amazon link? I see it on the 1world site - looks good and not too expensive. I like the idea of a sarong with pockets!

wsherman,
I have been considering to buy a sulu for some time now but the costs of shipping to the Netherlands plus customs fees and VAT have stopped me from ordering one.
A sulu is a men's wrap skirt with a only a small pocket in the front waistband. See http://tanoasamoa.com.
A sulu with slash pockets is called ie fataga. http://1globalpolyservices.com offers ie faitaga's in many colours and extra options like closing left or right and a choice of lenghts.
Could you post a pic of you in your sulu? That would give us an idea how it looks.

Thanks, Jan.

I may be mistaken on the details, but is not a sulu, like a pareo or sarong, just a rectangle of cloth?
What could be easier to make? The only adjustment necessary if your hips are wider than your waist, is to sew up a few darts at the top, and add a length of tape or cloth at each end to tie in a knot. I certainly would not want to pay p&p or customs charges just to have something authentic (probably made in Pakistan anyway, like "Scottish" kilts).

Hello Everyone!

Sorry I missed getting the link to the amazon site you should be able to get on at http://www.amazon.com .

JanR. thank-you for giving the proper name for the tailored sulu. I did try using it when I did the original search on amazon but it turned nothing up until I used just "men's sulu" and that's when I located the item. Is there not a U.K. version of amazon that might be less expensive? Sorry I must confess to an ignorance as to how shipment of overseas extentions of .com companies work.

Martin, the Sulu I think comes in two version, one is the simple garment you described and a more tailored version that Jan Rock named above and is used in as business or more formal occasions. The Vaka Taga as it is called has the slash pockets, belt loops, with a draw string that is threaded through a simple friction buckle that is designed to be on the inside out of sight. I hope that helps.

I am sorry that I will not be able to post a picture as I'm afraid it is beyond my meager skills as a screen reader user. Please accept my apologies. You should have seen the hoops I had to navigate just to get my membership reactivated here at the Cafe'. It seems that the security capture is designed to prevent such programs as my screen reader from gaining access. Thanks to Carl and Uncle Al though it was managed.

Well like the old "Merry Melodies" cartoons say "That's all folks!" at least for now. *wink*

OK - found it on Amazon with a simple search. Actually, it's still 1world that's selling it, listing through Amazon (as is so much anymore) - and for $2 more than via their own site. OTOH, the Amazon listing has more photos than does their own site, so it's still worth a look-see regardless of which site you actually purchase from:

From the pics, the sulus seem to close right over left.
Funny how many of us would refuse outright to wear a skirt or kilt that wrapped the "women's way" !!!
Or wear a shirt that buttoned up the " women's way"
A year or so ago I ordered a waistcoat made of the same tweed as my kilt. It was derived with buttons on the left, the seamstress not knowing who would be the wearer, and I sent it straight back to be remade. How daft, when you think about it !
Unthinking prejudices.

The direction of the "Wrap" is a biased thought based on the Kilt.
The Sulu, from Fiji, wraps right over left for men and women.

Many men, especially in urban areas, also have sulu va taga which is a tailored sulu and can
be tailored as part of their suit. Many will wear a shirt with a western-style collar, tie, and
jacket, with a matching sulu va taga and sandals, this type of sulu can be worn to a semi
formal or formal occasion.

I couldn't find a larger pic of the first shot posted but a Google Search for
Fiji Sulu resulted in MANY images. These I've posted are just a few.
Heck - even the kids wear them getting on a bus for school :!: :D

Nice photos you found, Al. Interesting (to me, anyhow) that in that last photo two of the men are obviously bare-footed, one of them even while wearing a white dress shirt and necktie! In that first photo, where they also seem to be dressed up with ties, they might also be barefoot, though it is so tiny that it could easily be my imagination and they're really wearing tan-colored shoes or sandals.

Goodday!

Well Iguess I get to type this post again oweing to the fact I hit the wrong button and made the original disappear! But such is life and this is small stuff.

Thank-you Uncle Al for the pictures and the explanation for the right to left wrap of the Sulu. I found that it is possible to reverse the wrap to a left to right by taking the lefthand apron and running it over the righthand apron then threading the drawstring throug the tailored hole in the waistband to the inside around the back to the friction buckle and fastening. This works so well that I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't designed for it. So if one really wants that left to right wrap it is Q.E.D.!

Well I wish everyone a plesant day with fair weather! We are currently in the 70'sF with sunshine and light winds just what I call a perfect day!

I can personally attest to the comfort of the brown sulu sold by 1WorldSarongs. I own both the black and the brown, and the brown is by far the more comfortable, mostly because it is 100% rayon, while the black sulu is a Poly/Cotton Blend. It might be hard to notice a difference in the material, but I sure have noticed it. I wear the brown more than the black. Plus with the brown, it easier to dress up or down. The black just looks a little too formal. I also own a Faitaga I got from Tanoa Samoa (http://www.tanoasamoa.com/catalog/index ... 9d1adab1e6), but most Faitaga's/formal Lavalavas are made of 100% polyester suit material, which isn't my personal favorite. If you are looking for the most comfortable in terms of material, go with the brown Sulu from 1WorldSarongs (IMO). The only other downfall with the 1WorldSarong sulus are the pockets; they are a little too far back for my liking, whereas the Tanoa Samoa ones are closer to the front of the body in a more natural position and are deeper.

Also, if it gets windy, just attach a kilt pin in the bottom corner and that helps keep the wrap part down better in the wind.
