Bannockburn
Well, it was 700 years since the Battle of Bannockburn and this was celebrated in Stirling by capacity crowds. Did you hear about it? (Bannockburn BTW is just about the most famous victory of Scotland over England when Robert the Bruce won a battle against a much larger army)
Of course not! It was decided by the Westminster government to hold "Armed Forces Day" at the same time. The latter could have been anywhere in the country (Portsmouth was most likely to get the nod) but the event was also held in the same town of Stirling. It would appear that the event was used as a political tool and not in commemoration of the excellent work that the Services do with frequent reports and references to being Better Together etc.
Here is a cartoon of the two events.

Re: Bannockburn
The 700th anniversary of Bannockburn was mentioned on BBC Radio 4, though I heard no mention (ever) of Armed Forces Day.
...I wonder if that is because Armed Forces Day was held so far from civilisation that the journalists never got there?

Have fun,
Ian.

Indeed why was it placed in Stirling when Portsmouth is a possible location for the Trident submarine fleet that will be relocated from Rosyth and Faslane following a YES vote on independence?
Certainly on the BBC News, the main report was all about "Armed Forces day" and only once (in the regional news section), was Bannockburn mentioned. Funnily enough the reporters who did manage the loooooonnnnnggggggg trek North, reported that there were 35,000 people at the Armed Forces day though an aerial photo of the entire event at its busiest period barely showed 3000 in attendance (despite it being free to enter)
Not sure how many attended the Bannockburn festivities (including a re-creation of said battle) but people were warned NOT to attend unless they had a ticket as it was "at capacity" (the capacity crowd that could be accommodated was noted as 45,000)
