Japanese "Rakuten" Unisex Denim Skirt

Post by Stu »

One of my students is a young, half-Japanese woman. She told me both she and her boyfriend had each bought a short, unisex denim skirt from the Japanese clothing maker Rakuten, and this is it:

A bit too short for me. What do you think?

It could be just about any short jeans skirt and look the same. As far as short goes men don't have the years of modesty practice that women grow up with. It can be learned but won't feel natural or be automatic right away. It seems to be a great summer skirt.
You don't get to judge me by your standards. I have to judge me by mine.

What's new?

I've bought second-hand denim in better condition than the skirt shown.

Have you seen another advertisement for a short denim skirt being advertised as "unisex"?

If not, then it's "new", surely?

I'm glad someone has the cojones to advertise a skirt, ANY skirt, as "unisex".

That said, its way too short for me!

In my opinion that skirt is way too short for us males with "boy bits".

A quick look at the length indicates, to this writer, that it's a simple "jeans skirt" right down to the direction of fastening and of a length that really isn't all that short. In fact, it may not even pass the "miniskirt" test where outstretched fingers need to touch bare legs for the garment to so qualify! Unequivocally though, I applaud the manufacturer for marketing it as "unisex". This possibly marks a break.

As far as any bloke that wants to "go commando" under something like that, I hope you get the same attention in the press (and police-blotters) that any of the modern celebutards do. Mostly the police-blotters. Flashing the "boy bits" to passers-by is most assuredly not the way to get skirts on guys accepted by the general public.

The same attention from the police? That would be none then...

Does anyone remember any celeb's being arrested, or even interviewed, as a result of an upskirt glimpse that proved a lack of underwear?

Come to that, does anyone really believe that a female "accidentally" exposing a lack of underwear will be treated the same way as a man? I suspect that double standards apply here.
Flashing the "boy bits" to passers-by is most assuredly not the way to get skirts on guys accepted by the general public.
No argument there.

Have fun,

For me, it's much too short. I like denim skirts, but they have to be around knee length. However, I know some guys like to wear them very short, perhaps with thick tights, and this would be fine for that.

Having said that, the significance of this seems to be lost on many people - the point is that Rakuten is not a specialist manufacturer - it is a mainstream, High Street, Japanese denim producer - and they have produced a proper, wearable unisex skirt aimed at young women - and men! If Levis did this, you'd all be jumping around hailing it as a breakthrough - so what's the problem? OK, so it's too short for the largely middle-aged guys on here (like me), but look at the wider picture. Rakuten today - Levis tomorrow?

A final note about going commando - DON'T! Not unless you can be 100% certain that you will not be uncovered (in every sense). If you do and people become aware of it, you will be written off as some kind of sicko or weirdo and that will damage the chances of men wearing skirts generally.

I'll believe they really meant "unisex" when they show a man wearing their skirts.

(What I meant by "what's new?" was that the skirt shown is no different than many others already in the shops (ok -- the women's section of shops), and which some of us are already wearing (mine are a bit longer).)

I agree that it seems to be just a bog-standard denim skirt of standard length but it wouldn't be too short for me - in summer at least. Too short for the icicular weather out there even with thick tights. I notice that in the picture shown they don't actually show a man wearing the skirt - both pictures are of the same woman wearing it. As for going commando under a skirt - that's a definite no. On grounds of hygiene and modesty. I agree that this would not add credence to our campaign to make skirts an acceptable form of dress for men. I agree about the apparent "feathering" of the hem to make it appear as worn - if I'm buying a new skirt I expect it to be pristine and any wear to be as a result of my usage. Don't like the craze for putting rips and tears in skirts and jeans either - I could do that myself whilst engaging in diy.

After first seeing this link posted above, I found the Brappers website and clicked around a bit until I found the section for this skirt. I guess that it's good news that they are "Sold Out"-for both of their colors/styles.

That said, if this is truly a unisex skirt, then why did the site only show pics of girls wearing it?

I agree that the length might be a bit short for me too. I do have a shortish denim skirt, not sure how it compares to the length of this one,so who knows.

Yes, today it is in Japan, tomorrow, perhaps other countries.

The translation on the site is kinda clunky, to say the least. Included in some of the text that had been translated into English, the word "Vomit" was observed a few times. The context was unclear, at least to me, but I feel rather confident stating that it was to mean something quite different than what it did to me.

I did a 'bing.com' translation of "vomit" from English into Japanese. then I translated the result back into English. This was the result-
vomit-[transitive]
1. "Up"blood and ate "vomit, vomiting?
2. "Out spit, spit out"smoke-swearing etc?
vomit-[intransitive]
1. Vomiting, they throw up
2. Eruption [eruptions].
vomit-[noun]
1. Vomiting (swollen), spit.
2. How, and vomit.

Could they have meant "erupt"?
As in erupt (burst forth) into the market?

That wasn't lost on me at all, and I am pleased to see a mainstream manufaturer stepping up to the plate on this. Perhaps if the notion catches on in Japan it may migrate across the oceans to other places.

On the matter of length. That skirt is longer than it looks; take a look where the model's fingers are. It's perfectly possible to remain modest in something that length, especially if opaque tights are involved. However, one might catch some stick for it from the more "conservative" members of society; I caught grief last night for taking, and wearing one morning, my "little white dress", which is perfectly modest, on my big sailing trip this past July. No matter how open-minded you think your inner circle may be, sometimes one might be surprised. I was not amused getting reprimanded for something done six months ago. I'm beginning to wonder whether it's all worth it or not.
