You opinion, please, on this skirt
Where I live in San Francisco it's been foggy and below 6oF every day for the last two months. So naturally a guy's thoughts turn to fall/winter skirts. What do all of you think of this?
http://www.landsend.com/pp/TweedFlareSk ... igin=index
The web page says it is 95% acrylic but I've confirmed through an online chat that it is really 61% wool/35% rayon/3% nylon/1% spandex, which is what their paper catalog says. I think the color is good for the season. I am concerned about the wide waistband and the fact that it isn't an elastic waist which makes getting the fit more difficult.
I'm going to order a swatch so I can get a better idea of the fabric and then wait to see the comments posted by other purchasers.

Re: You opinion, please, on this skirt
Looks Ok to me, but is there some distortion on that photo? I get a sense of the image being elongated. Can't see the wide waistband though. I've seen skirts locally with deep four inch-ish waistbands which look non-masculine, and too 'dainty' for me to get interested, but the skirt here looks undetailed up to the top.

Re: You opinion, please, on this skirt
um..when THIS guy has a "so naturally" thought, it usually hasn't much to do with My clothing, it more often has to do with getting clothes OFF any handy female I have on my mind. Most men I know have exactly the same type "so naturally" thoughts...But, perhaps in SF most men are more interested in getting warm tweedy skirts ON themselves and not OFF the closest able and ready female. So naturally a guy's thoughts turn to fall/winter skirts. What do all of you think of this?

Re: You opinion, please, on this skirt
I haven't had a chance to look at the skirt as my browser here balked at the link, but even deep waistbands can be handily concealed using jackets, especially, if as mentioned, the temperatures aren't above 60 (F). Jackets and skirts can work astonishingly well together.
Cooler times are coming in my part of the world, so it's going to be time to dig out my long heavy skirts again. Yay! (I never thought I'd hear that sentiment from me. I hate -- positively hate -- the cold and the dark of winter.)

Looks good to me, I do not think the waistband is a problem.

Re: You opinion, please, on this skirt
I just got a look at the skirt in question and don't think the waistband will be a problem either. I also think that sort of skirt would look really good with a jacket or sport-coat.

Tweed, historically, is a masculine material used to make suits, whether with trousers or kilts.
I would love to have a 4/5 piece suit - - - - - -
Jacket, Vest, Trousers, with Box-Pleated Kilt and/or Box-Pleated Skirt.
What a way to 'mix-n-match' an outfit.

1) Shirt & Kilt
2) Shirt & Kilt with the jacket
3) Shirt & Kilt with the vest
4) Shirt & Kilt with vest and jacket
5) Substitute the Skirt for the Kilt in the above list
You can add a tie

Similar to the Harris Tweed outfit from Glen Tilt Tweeds but with a Box Pleated Kilt instead of a
traditional kilt. I can't find the pic of the Kilt Suit where the Jacket, Vest and Kilt are made of
the same material.
Repeat the process and substitute trousers/skirt for the kilt.
(Please don't beat me up for saying the above sentence

BTW - A box-pleated skirt could appear to be a kilt to the non-educated eye.

Wow, I thought we had hopeless weather over here in Scotland. Don't you get summer at all?skirted_in_SF wrote:Where I live in San Francisco it's been foggy and below 6oF every day for the last two months.
I don't see any problem with the waistband. Nice autumnal (or "sludgy") colour that would be unremarkable for a man. Overall a nice skirt.skirted_in_SF wrote: So naturally a guy's thoughts turn to fall/winter skirts. What do all of you think of this?

Re: You opinion, please, on this skirt
Nice skirt.
Pleasant autumn color.
With the fabric content being predominately wool may require 'Dry Cleaning' rather than wash & wear laundry.
And now for the difficult part - HEM length - a tad too long for my taste "But who am I the 800 lb gorrilla"?
HEM Length - •Waist to hem lengths: Regular, 27"; Petite, 25 1/2"; Plus, 29"
Thus if worn at the waist (navel like a kilt) then a 6 foot tall bloke would have each of these below the knee.
Standard kilt hem measurement is 24" or two feet from navel to knee for a 6 foot kiltman.
But you are no doubt going to wear this skirt a bit lower perhaps off the hip bone causing it to ride much lower than
the knee which may required tailoring the hem length to fit unless you want it that way.
And now to the other problem - WAIST - I like the wide waist band resembles the waist on a kilt with sewen down pleats
a nice flat broad area. "BUT" the waist is not adjustable like a kilt or a elastic waist skirt. The waist must fasten with a side
zipper although none is described or shown in the photos. It could very well be in the center back seam (rear view not shown).
With a zipper waist closing it is a fixed measurement waist and thus you could expect no more than 1-2 inches of ease/play
in getting it to fit at whatever you determine to be you waist. Then again order a larger size and a small degree of tailoring
can put you into the ball park (think 'darts' in the waist band).
On a positive note this skirt would look fine with calf or ankle length boots and a white or pastel solid color blouse or polo shirt.
No critics were harmed or their feelings hurt in making this critical evaluation. LOL

"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

Re: You opinion, please, on this skirt
Thanks for everyone's input. To respond to some -
I happen to have a 27" skirt in my collection already. Even at navel height, it still comes to three inches or so below my knees. (I'm 5'9" with a 31" inseam.) I would probably buy this skirt in the petite so it would be an inch a half shorter. If that is still too long, I can get it shortened for a modest amount in Chinatown. It is lined though, so that would increase the alteration cost. I'm thinking more mid-knee length.
The catalog advises dry clean only, but I'm used to that with wool clothing. I asked the person in my chat session about the closure. She told me it has a left side zipper and hook and eye.
Yes, it has been an unusually foggy summer. Normally we would get at least a day or two here and there of sunshine to break things up. Not this year though. September and October are summer here. Of course, the days start getting short in October.

To my opinion it is too long and a little bit (too) girly.

Nice skirt.
A rather feminine shape - but that's nice too.
Too short for me though, I only wear long skirts - I don't have legs as good as that model!

Re: You opinion, please, on this skirt
After reading some favorable reviews on LE's site, I went ahead and ordered the skirt this evening. To be honest a 30% off code in an e-mail I received earlier this week helped with the decision.
Yesterday I saw an ad on a bus shelter from American Apparel for long cotton socks. I may look into adding a pair of them to help me with my coldness issues. Who knows, I may end up wearing skirts more than I have been here in frigid San Francisco.

Skirt looks fine to me. Also check with Sock Dreams (www.sockdreams.com) for knee-high socks to wear with it and your other skirts. Thanks for the tip on socks Kilted_John.
I spent the last week (four days of which were skirted) over the hill from where you live - near Yakima and along the Columbia River near the Canadian border.
