on French tv

Post by couyalair »

I've just heard about a French TV video report. It was 1 year old.

Have a look http://videos.tf1.fr/jt-1...-d-ouessant-6060107.html

Apparently an association of locals who have decided to create a kilt to show their ethnic identity (or something of that kind); not play-acting, it's all to be taken seriously.
They said the tartan was a new one made up of the colours of the local Ouessant and Britanny flags, plus some blue for the sea, and it has been registered with the tartan authority (actually, they said "with the Scottish government").

The seamstress (wearing trousers, of course) said it took her all of three hours to sew up a kilt (hmm! takes a lot longer than that in Scotland); the result looked quite good anyway.

And of course the report finished with the usual question, with the reply that it was a good thing to maintain the mystery.

There are already several registered tartans for Britanny and Normandie, by the way, though how many wearers there are I cannot say.

Nice pictures. Unfortunately, I don't speak French.

One thing I did notice was the women "folding the pleats".
She was working like it was plain/solid color material. She
was not matching the "Set" of the plaid. That could be
why she only took 3 hours to make it. A proper kilt with
matched "Set" and deep pleats takes much longer time
to create. (B.T.D.T.)

X-marks...thinking back a few years.....

I recall a reference about kilting in Britanny. Also, there was at least one Welsh gentleman - kilted - posting to X-marks, who mentioned something about tartans in Wales.

What those places have in common is a Celtic background. Apparently there is an interest in the kilt because it is Celtic, even if it is not associated with those places.

Ireland? Associated with saffron kilts. I also seem to recall a reference to green kilts.
