Re: I am Pleased to See
Welcome aboard, Jimmy!
You are quite right -- few rigs are as classic looking as a formal highland outfit. 'Tis a pity there aren't more places and times when one can actually do so as they're viewed as formal attire. This, though, seems to be morphing a bit with the introduction of contemporary styles that do not seem to demand all the traditional trappings.

Thanks CRF.
I am a bit of a cheat though, I guess- being Scottish. However, it is nice that our National Dress appeals to the wider population.

From somebody born in Liverpool but living west of Helensburgh for close to thirty years now, the kilt always is a great thing to wear, formally or informally, however they are not the easiest skirt to wear. I have recently spent some hours wandering around Glasgow in long denim skirts. No one batted an eyelid, only comment was very complementary. There is more to not wearing trousers than just kilts!

Most definitely, especially if you are from the USA rather than Scotland. Variety is a good thing. Like you say, denim skirts of all lengths, pleats or not, pockets with zippers, snaps or buttons, belt loops or elastic, etc. tend to be invisible to the general public. Most people who have a life of their own have far larger problems than to critique your clothing choices.

Kilts for all, certainly, but I think all the expensive accessories that Scottish businesses (and pseudo Scottish ones in distant lands) are peddling is holding back the use of the kilt for everyday wear. If men think that to wear the kilt they must also don a fancy jacket with shiny buttons, shoes laces halfway up their legs, not to mention outlandish furry pouches and tartan drapes and funny shaped hats, then they are either not going to pay out for it all, or, of they do, they'll keep it in a cupboard for a special occasion, perhaps once a year.Glasgow Jimmmy wrote:Lots of Kilt postings.
Highland Dress for all ...
I wear kilts every day, but the rest of my clothes are the same as if I were wearing trousers (well, yes, I favour long thick wooly socks in winter!) Who wants to parade around with sporran, flashes, sgian dhu and all the bits just to go shopping, hiking, working or resting?
The fancy accessories may be good for business, but not for the spread of the kilt.

I wear my kilts the same as I would a shorts, a tee shirt and sandals for summer with a leather bag acroos the shoulder to hold my wallet, key, etc.

Re: I am Pleased to See
I have never found an occasion where a kilt would be preferable to the typical five dollar skirt from the clearance rack. A kilt is much too heavy to be remotely comfortable during hot weather due to the heavy fabrics such as wool that differentiates a kilt from the other varieties of skirts. A tee shirt with a kilt would look rather absurd. I would recommend a short denim skirt or a cotton miniskirt with a tee shirt. I can't even imagine sandals with a kilt. I fear that the word "kilt" is being applied to skirts that do not have the classic Scottish kilt heritage but in fact are just skirts that come in hundreds of lengths, fabrics, pockets, belt loops, zippers, pleats, colors, etc. Some men can't seem to acknowledge that you can't change any skirt into a kilt type of skirt just by calling it a kilt. Maybe it is that sexual insecurity syndrome.

A kilt can work well with a tee shirt, a few years ago I did the Llangollen canal, kilted for a week and totally informal, I think there are a couple of piccies on my pics and looks thread. The kilt there was about twenty years old and suffering as I was 28 lbs heavier than when the kilt was made. I now have a new one, but that one did for cavorting up the canal!
