If only

Post by crggrg »

I am just wondering what other people would be like for instance if say, us guys had been brought up from childhood being able to have to choice of being able to wear skirts or trousers (like girls do). Do you think you would wear a skirt out and about everyday, for both leasure and work activities, or would you do what many women do nowadays and alternate between the two, or would you stick to trousers mainly and wear skirts occasionaly

Obviously this is wild imagination as Im afraid this option has never been there for us from such as young age, but I am interested to what people think about this

Personally, I think I would wear skirts almost everyday

I can only write this from personal perspective, and I'm far enough away from my childhood that it has only faint echoes on who I am now. Too, there are no surviving family members that have any sort of power of compulsion over me, so that worry is off he table as well. So, not having the option of skirts when I was a young lad doesn't usually enter the equation of what I'm going to wear on any given day.

Given the above for limited context, I vary between trousers and skirts mostly based on whim and the weather. I find that if I'm trying to make a statement with my attire I am more likely to wear a skirt (and wear a tie) than I am trousers, but if the "mission" is to get a point across so that the point is the entire matter I'll wear the standard male-drab. If I'm in a good mood, I am vastly more likely to wear a skirt than if I'm depressed -- and this has been noticed by more than a few folks -- and if the weather is likely to be hot I am more likely to wear a skirt.

All in all, I spend more time in skirts than I do in trousers, but would not want to give up the option of trousers for when the mood or need demands. I feel that having the choice is what's important, not what any given individual wears on any given day.

A number of my colleagues know I wear skirts at social events although I have not worn a skirt in the office at my current employers, however even if you could change the social environment, skirts would rarely be an option for me at work due to time spent in the production area most days. Loose clothing is not an option there because of moving machinery. I guess I could go with very fitted short skirts, but that would not project the image I regard as appropriate for work.

Like Carl, my childhood is a way behind me now, My mother is still alive, but has no issues with me wearing a kilt or "respectable" skirt (her word, not mine so I'm not entirely sure what that means) so I have no significant family pressures. Outside work I guess I'm around 50 / 50 skirts / trousers. I doubt whether that would change much in your scenario, since my choice of clothing is generally driven by what I'm doing.

Have fun,

Ian.

I have to say that I agree with the "choice" argument. I would say that, if skirts for men became entirely commonplace, I would probably only wear them 20% - 30% of the time, and then mainly in summer. Trousers are way more convenient for most practical purposes, but I would like what women enjoy, i.e. the option.

I am all for choice and I am fortunate that I am semi-retired and not restricted by employers' dress codes. For example on Sunday I wore trousers until mid afternoon then changed into a kilt before going out for a meal, Monday wore a kilt all day, Tuesday wore a jeans skirt all day and today which started off wet and windy I have been wearing trousers all day.

I'm one of those rare birds tha wear only skirts -- generally kilts until the weather warms up. Retired, so no outside constraints.

Of course we should have the freedom to choose, but I can't imagine my going for bifurcated garments in my usual day-to-day activities, and I have not yet found skirts unsuitable (in my own eyes; never mind what the public finds suitable!).

In actuality, girls don't...have the choice of pants or skirts from birth. Even today, girls are stuffed into dresses, bows, fancy fancy clothes until they start school and see other girls in pants and start thinking about trying them and ask Mommy if they can.

About a year ago, I went to the Baptism of a young man of 4 years old. There were at least 30 3 to 5 year old girls there and all were in the fanciest dresses their parents could find. (Their mothers were about 65% trousered.)

This is speaking from a viewpoint of wear in the USA, North and South America, Europe and the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. Not counting India, or the Far East. I think Europe is probably still behind the West in trousered women. I may be wrong. :D :D
