My Diet(?) and Exercise Program (LOL)

Post by DALederle »

Pkay, two months ago, back in Septemeber, I promised myself I would diet and excersise. I had looked myself in the mirror and DIDN'T like what I saw. A fat old man with a big belly. All my clothes were getting tight and I was having trouble finding things to wear. And my own logic told me that diet and excersis would be good for my breathing.
I was 265 lbs at the time.
I got on the scale today and discovered I'm 278 lbs. I GAINED 13 LBS. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay one excuse is that the batteries on my scale were out and I just replaced them. Okay, that's lame.
The other excuse is that with the cooler weather Barb has been making "comfort" food. Stews, lasagna, turkey breasts, with gravy, etc.
And then there was a month of halloween candy to nibble on every day.
And the air polution effected my breathing for a while so I actually stopped excercising at the same time.
But that's all just an excuse in the long run.
I have been nibbling all day long. When we eat dinner I feel stuffed already before I begin.
I HAVE BEEN pigging out!
So here I go again.
I am going to diet and exercise!
Well, maybe by putting it up here it will goad me a little more.
I'll post my (hopefully) weight loss as I go along.
If I lose enough maybe I can get a job at Subway.

Dale,
Log everything you eat, period, without fail. I use CalorieKing.com, it is a nice site and easy to use.

Cardio 3X/week for 30 mins each time without fail.

Do weight training min 2X per week, hit all the major muscle groups, helps build muscle which means you can burn more calories just sitting around.

Get rid of all the unhealthy food in your house, no exceptions.

That's all there is to it, aren't you glad you asked ;)

JR has hit the nail right on the head and there is little to add.

OK, at age 66 you're no spring chicken, but at nearly 69 neither am I.
At 270-odd lbs you're a very big guy.....Well over 6 feet ?, and you probably already have some joint problems, which doesn't help at all.

Diet is certainly mandatory, and cardio exercise also a must, but what form that takes really depends on what you can actually do. In another thread yesterday I mentioned four non-impact exercise diciplines which are suitable for us older folks....Cycling, kayaking, rowing and swimming. Running is OUT! You'll crucify and injure yourself. Walking is OK but not nearly intensive enough....Doesn't qualify as Cardio. Don't ask any golfer....They don't understand Cardio.

Start with the diet, anyway, & stick to it. It's a lifestyle thing. So is regular cardio, of course.

As a slightly funny aside I sometimes joke about mine.....my diet, I mean: It's the Seefood Diet, that is, When I see food....I eat it! I've been 190-odd lbs constantly for some 46 years now, since I was 22 yrs. old. I wish you luck !
Carpe Diem......Seize the Day !

And then there was a month of halloween candy to nibble on every day.
Yanno how much left over Halloween candy I nibble?? None, I didn't buy any, I didn't turn my light on either. Last year, there were no kids, only adults not in costumes knocking and asking for money, not candy. Their story was a great one. "We don't know what's IN any candy we're given and don't want poisoned candy so just give us the money and we'll buy our own." My response last year...That's a wonderful Idea. Go buy your own! Sour looks and no comments as they walked away. Later, I heard someone in the back yard and I called out through the wall. "I've called the Police, I know who was here earlier and I'll give the cops your names". I heard rustling around and a car start a couple of doors away. Cops showed, I gave them the names anyhow.

Halloween is not a night to collect dope money for dopers. At least, not on my watch.

So far I've only gained two more pounds! Drat! I'm now 280 lbs. and NOTHING fits. My bear belly (which isn't from beer) leaves me with only two pair of sweat pants that I can get into. Even my kilts and skirts don't fee l comfortable now.
One of the biggest problem is my breathing.
I had lost two pounds two days ago.
And then I had a breathing relapse and that leaves gasping for breath so hard that suddenly I can't do my main excersise, which is riding my stationary bike. I do 20 minutes at a time and cover 1.7 miles in that time. When I first started riding it after I retired I could only go at an average speed of 2-1/2 or 3 miles per hour. And I was lucky to .25 miles at a ride. But little by little I've gotten some speed back. I now do 5-1/2 to 6 MPH.
But when my breathing acts up I find myself having to lay down and take naps. Almost every afternoon.
And that when I start to add on extra pounds.
It's a vicious cycle I'm trying to get around.
Well, tomorrow is Monday and maybe things will be better in the am,

Check this with your medical professionals, but you may actually want to use your oxygen (which I seem to recall you saying you had) during the early bits of your workout regimen. I'll stress that again -- pose the question to your practitioners! You may actually be doing yourself a disservice if you're going without supplement early on.
I had lost two pounds two days ago.
Two pounds delta is nothing at normal male mass; quite literally it's the difference between before one visits the head and when one leaves. At my weight, now crawling back to the 200 mark, it's a piddly one-percenter -- noting to worry about.

Contemplate, instead, fives -- pounds, that is. This, interestingly, is something that bedevils our sisters in their impossible quest to be supermodel-thin -- they worry about weight down to the ounce (and modern digital scales read in 1/10s of a pound, which is close enough) which furthers the sense of despair, and the whole thing spirals rapidly downward from there. Offhand, I'd recommend weighing once a week at most and keeping a record of what's going on; wobbles, both up and down, are normal -- it's the long-term trend you're after. And, again, verify this with your practitioners!
And then I had a breathing relapse and that leaves gasping for breath so hard that suddenly I can't do my main excersise, which is riding my stationary bike.
See above, with the proviso of checking it with your practitioners.

Best of luck with it!

Good news, I lost three pounds over the last two days and am now at 277. Only one pound from my 278 start. But it is something, at least.
I have to use my oxygen when I excercise, which adds to the complications for me. I get tired of being tangled up in hose from the concentrator. The dogs keep stepping on it and making harder then needed for things I try to do.
Well, atleast I'm above the dirt. As Reilly used to say.
Did you hear about the three hippies that decided to rob an armored bank car and got away with a Wonder Bread truck instead? LOL

Down to 20 stone 8 pounds yesterday. A stone is 14 pounds, I am too tired to do the math, just off a nightshift. My latest weight loss technique works well. You get measured up and order a tailor made kilt, then shrink so that you need to get it altered! In the words of Homer S. "D'OH!" :?

I have stones in my backyard bigger than 14 pounds. Smaller too. From dust to auto sized. :faint:

Down to 273 lbs. today.
Rode 2 miles on my exercise bike yesterday and still feel good today.
It took me 24 minutes, but that is better then I've done all year. I usually stop at 20 minutes and 1-1/2 miles.
Maybe there still for me to get to look like Steve Reeves yet!
Does anyone remember him and Scott Gordon?

Held at 273 lbs. but made a 2 mile ride on my exercise bike in 19 minutes yesterday. So for 20 minutes that made a 2.14 mile ride.
I feel pretty good today!
Not up for Christmas shopping though.
Happy THnaksgiving, everyone!

That's great news, Dennis. Keep it up! You'll be 20 again in no time. ;)
Not up for Christmas shopping though.
Neither are we; Sapphire and I are now in "retail-avoidance mode" for the next several weeks. (Thank goodness for catalogues and on-line sellers!)

At 272 lbs. this a.m. Fri.
Made a 2.21 mile ride in 20 minutes yesterday. I'm moving from every other day for my rides to every day now. Hoping to see some real results soon. Am feeling much better. Made the 2 mile mark in just a hair under 19 minutes.
I'm predicating my bycyle riding on the fact that you never see fat bicyclists. At least not the serious riders. Nor do you see fat marathon runners. But I can't do the marathon and staying home on my bike becomes my best option.
