Well, for the short time I was outside this morning, I was in a denium
A-Line skirt, seersucker shirt and sandles. I had to come in the house
around 9 AM. The heat was really increasing. The temp at 2PM was 107.1 F
and I don't care what anyone says, it's time to stay inside :!:

So, I pay the A/C bills, but it beats heat/sun stroke :!:

Yup, the women have started digging out their nice cool floaty skirts, and some men are still wearing suits, ties, shoes and socks, or at least short sleeve shirts with a tie (I gave up wearing shoes a couple of weeks ago, and wear sandals with no socks- and no suit or tie!). On the other hand, we've got air con at work so the men's clothing (which is heavier than women's clothing) is OK until we get outside, then the heat hits you.
I saw a wedding party last Saturday. The men were sweating in penguin suits, while the women were in skimpy summer dresses. Why do we do it guys?

Just to be fair about women's clothing choices vs. men's choices, it should be noted that not any woman can wear any thing. Some women do not have the body type for a "skimpy summer dress". Now in a truly liberated society where men can wear skirts, a full figured woman should be able to wear what she wants too. We know that society is not that advanced. Should we be thankful that some people know their fashion limitations?

At least at Contra dances, I see women of all "body types" wearing "skimpy summer dresses" (summer and winter.) And of all body types wearing decidely un-skimpy clothing. The choice of how skimpy seems to be based more on the wearer's sense of modesty and the extent to which she sweats than on some fashion tyrant's idea of what is acceptable for her to wear.

If anything, since heavier people are likely to produce more heat, especially when spending an evening careening from one end of a gymnasium or recreation hall to the other and back, one would expect the heavier women to be more likely to wear loose, "skimpy" dresses.

And your point?

"We" also "know" that "society is not ... advanced" enough for men in skirts (and dresses.) Whatever point you might make about women with the "wrong" body type wearing "skimpy summer dresses" applies in spades to people with the "wrong" anatomy wearing skirts or dresses or other "women's" clothing.

No.

Someone once wrote that there is a difference between fashion and style. Fashion means dressing according to other people's ideas. Style means dressing according to your own. I vote for style over fashion.

Actually, after my 'skimpy dress' comment, I realised that the tables are reversed for weddings in the winter. The men are warm in their suits, while the women freeze in their thinner clothing, worn to look pretty, especially the bride who often wears an off the shoulder creation.

This is where "accessories" like shawls and capes come into play; such articles allow the lady-folk to layer things conveniently at the expense of extra complexity -- and a simple shawl can range from gauze-like fabric designed for show only to heavyweight thermal blanketing. Remember too, in the wintertime, the menfolk will also have their heavy coats that'll go on over their penguin-suits, but other than the outer-coat the standard rig is pretty much the same summer or winter.

In any event, when was the last time that anybody saw an out-of-doors winter wedding? ;)

I don't know how many that are like me but personally I don't tolerate heat as good as cold. Especially if it is a moisty heat. Being forced to wear a suit and tie when it is hot is not pleasent. I remeber a couple of years ago when I was in Macau and it was about 30 degrees and 100% humidity. I could hardly walk 2 meeters before i was sweating.

I would love the soft thin fabrics of skirts and dresses in thoose curcumstances. Since I tolerate cold I wouldn't mind it in the winter either. Just put on a jacket and have a longer skirts that goes all the way down to the ankle.

Hi,
It's been annoyingly unpredictable since we had the really hot spell a couple of weeks ago. I'm going out to work in a short skirt and sandles or flip-flops and getting caught in a downpour. Do I need my shades (new, cool, pair), or do I need my brolly, or should I take both. Yesterday it seemed cooler, so I wore a long skirt; it was too damned hot! I just wish it would make up its mind, and settle down a bit.

That being so, the hot spell got to be too much, especially at night trying to sleep. My flat faces south-east so gets the sun for most of the day, and since some idiots employed by my landlord to paint the outside of the windows painted them shut, I haven't been able to open them and let any air in!

Cold showers get a bit tedious after the 4th or 5th in a day....

Mind you, I was still going out for a run most evenings, so who's stupid now?

Sitting here at work today, knee length grey denim skirt and sandles, weather likely to turn stormy this afternoon, and I need to go into the city centre at quitting time to do some shopping. I have a suspicion I'm in for a soaking, and my sandles will be drying for the next two days! C'est la Vie....

Must be the Ashes that are doing it. Cricket always brings on the rain. Still, when we send the Aussies home without them, it'll have been worth it...bring on the Second Test!

Best wishes,
Ash

Down here in the Florida Keys it's just the opposite, The rain always brings out the crickets. It rains, everything gets soaked, the rain stops, it gets to be night time, the crickets wake up and start singing to the Gods of Rain.....hehehehe :alien: 8) :alien:

Heat Wave Predicted for New England

Post by crfriend »

The US National Weather Service is predicting temperatures in excess of 90 degrees for the next four days in the Eastern Massachusetts area, and three consecutive days of 90+ degree temperatures constitutes a "heat wave".

Via e-mail at work yesterday, I received word that my Company has a deal with the local electricity utility that gets us lower electrical rates if we agree to "shed load" during excessive-peak usage, and likely that's going to apply on Monday and Tuesday. The steps we're going to be taking to shed load will be to up the set-points on the building A/C to 78 degrees and to run our main computing facility on our private generator; the advice given to the local staff was, "If this concerns you, keep a pair of short pants in your office in case you want them." A problem exists here: I don't own a pair of short pants (that are presentable in decent company), so I simply plan on wearing skirts. Problem solved. (I hinted this plan to my boss, who has seen me in a skirt, and he didn't even bat an eyelash.)

I already have two candidates picked out (one of which I'll have to ask Sapphire for permission for) that (1) are work-appropriate and (2) cool and comfy. I'm looking at this as an opportunity!

Do they plan to break out the lawn sprinkler to cool down the air conditioner again?

And while the sprinkler's on, the employees could run back and forth through it!
Be sure to bring your swim suit and flip-flops to work...
:)

When I worked for a division of the electric company, we had to shed load too, by way of setting a good example.

Well, flip-flops are everyday wear where I work (yuck), as are other "casual looks" that don't just border on, but delve deeply into, "grunge". There are times that even I yearn for a return to dress-codes....

Actually, it wasn't the air-conditioning, it was the main input-transformer to the building. We've since replaced the 1MW one for a 4MW beastie that doesn't run so hot. Actually, the lawn-sprinkler helped a bit -- I have pictures and one can see the steam rising from where the droplets hit the cooling radiator, and that cooled it just enough to keep it from giving up.
