Why are these only for women?
Why are these only for women?
I am talking about the American Apparel "disco pant". These are an exact replica of the old spandex disco jeans, which are as the name implies pants with the same cut as jeans but made of spandex instead of denim or other cotton.
They are shiny, and quite form fitting. A good example would be Sandy's pants in the fair scene in grease.
I acquired a pair of black ones, and love them. They fit great and feel nice. The only "feminine" things about them I can denote is their tightness on the thighs and calves, oh and they are shiny.
Now when it comes to the shiny, I don't understand why men are supposed to wear dull clothes, why is shiny so connected with women? As far as the fit is concerned, they would be considered skinny "skater" jeans if they were made of denim. Why is it contemporary male clothing is both dull and for the most part shapeless?
I realize my topic here is not skirts, but it is free style.
I personally see no reason these pants should be marketed to only women.
I have one pic of me in them, excuse the pose, I was being a little silly with for my room mate and attempting to duplicate the model's pose in the AA site for the pants. In the pic you can just see the rear pockets, and hardly see the front zip (which has the flap direction of a male pant (?). They are of a thick material, which is close to completely opaque, only in the strongest light can flesh tone be seen.

Re: Why are these only for women?
Well. I might surmise that the problem here is that guys are "not supposed to" emphasise their physique whereas women are "encouraged" to. It's utter b*llocks, of course, because guys can have decent bodies just as well as the gals can. That garment would have looked right at home in the late 1970s on either sex; however, things have gotten more "conservative" (read, "lacking in imagination and vision") in the intervening years, and so it's come to pass that such garb is only marketed to -- and, hence, only acceptable for -- women. Here's the challenge: in a fifteen minute window, find ten women that could pull the look off well; if you're anywhere other than a vanity gym, I doubt you can do so.Pythos wrote:I am talking about the American Apparel "disco pant".[...]They are shiny, and quite form fitting. That's fine, and I see no reason to question your post. But, given the generally expanding waistline of modern "developed" cultures, how many could actually carry such a look off?I realize my topic here is not skirts, but it is free style.

Re: Why are these only for women?
As with many garments they are often meant for a particular segment of the population. Of course overweight people men or women would not look good in them, so they are not meant for those people, exagerating the over weight instead of showing a "sound body".
For people who would be complimented by wearing them I don't see why they are not worn by men, as there must be enough men out there who do wish to show off their nice proportioned bodys to women. And I would think that they are very comfortable too. Possibly the fashion scene has something to do with it, as every year there must be a substantial change, otherwise heaven forbid, we would be satisfied with what we have...
and not see the need to buy something new.

A man is the same man in a pair of pants or a skirt. It is only the way people look at him that makes the difference.

Re: Why are these only for women?
you can wear you like to - my problem is i cant wear men jeans or trousers cos it too big for me as my waist is less the men min size which is from 30" to over 40" (UK size) -- my size is 26" waist so I used women jeans for my work that look same as men jeans -- I also have skinny jeans as well also some nice leggings, dont see any problems -- you can wear what you like
most of my mini skirt size is 6 which is prefect size for my waist -still problem i still cant gain my weight cos Im suffered from weight loss for years -- that why i wonder if men body size same as me that cant buy men trousers or jeans so use women jeans or anything with prefect size - still dont see any problem at all
anyway it look cool on yer picture...hmmmm wear it and enjoy

Pythos,
You look very good in those pants and you certainly have the body for them.
Miniskirt07,
Both men and women who are slender and/or petite. There are very slender, short women who need to find their clothing in the children's section. I just mention this to let you know that you are not alone in the world in having challenges finding clothing that fits properly

Re: Why are these only for women?
let me get this out, understand when I wear my leggings, and now these pants, I do not wear to emphasize my (ahem) "package". Even though women get away with the equivalent when displaying their chests, there is just something about that area of the male physique I would personally not like to see. However, that being said, there is little to no way of hiding the fact men have those parts when wearing pants a little tighter than the sloppy styles of today.
I do like showing off my leg structure, and yes even me bum. I have heard women state they like to see the posterior of a guy when checking him out...which is confusing seeing as most guys clothes completely distort or hide this area. I have seen guys in trousers that make their rear look like a rectangular brick. I like to be able to show my build, instead of hiding it under a shapeless "power" suit.
Many cannot carry off the look. I know this, but I cannot carry off the muscle bound, "He man" look due to my muscle structure (long lean, I have heard them referred to as "tweak" muscles, that are good for endurance rather than short sprints). Daily I push or pull thousand pound aircraft, on my own with these sticks (as some people call them), as well as pushing closed the hanger three segments at a time (most at my shop can do at most two, or even one) I have a lean, and thin build. I have in the past attempted to "bulk up" due to peer pressure (I honestly did not want to bulk up, I did not like the look), and my body just got stronger and not bulkier. My strength is mostly in my legs. I have not so much upper body strength, which is fine, seeing as I have enough upper body strength to do that which I need to, and choose to resort to leg work if I ever get into a fight, which I don't intend to do.
I wear the stuff I do because A) it is different B)it does not hide my build C) they are damned comfortable, and fun to wear. These reasons should be enough for the naysayers out there. But unfortunately this is not the case.
How did I end up on this soap box?:) Lol

Perhaps because it is a subject that matters to you? Who cares how you came to write what you did? What you wrote is fair and heartfelt - good on you.Pythos wrote:How did I end up on this soap box?:)
Carry on wearing your styles and being yourself; people who are worth paying attention to will only respect you for it.

I got better pics of these things posted in the pics and looks section. Oh yea I recently acquired a digital camera so pics may become more common.

Re: Why are these only for women?
Did I intimate that? If so, it was in error, and your general appearance, by using a low-slung belt to "disguise" things, points that up rather well. You've got the perfect body-type to wear such garments, and you're dead within your rights to wear such; actually, anybody has the right to wear such attire even if they cannot pull the look off (I fall into that category).Pythos wrote:Cf friend, understand when I wear my leggings, and now these pants, I do not wear to emphasize my (ahem) "package".
Everybody beyond a "certain age" knows what pieces-parts everybody else has, so all one needs to "worry about" is taste and tact.
As well you should!I do like showing off my leg structure, and yes even me bum. Re: Why are these only for women?
I suppose that many men are afraid to wear this. It sounds strange what I say, but perhaps there will be (stupid) men they think you are gay. I am not sure about this, but it is my personal point of view. These (stupid) men are the same ones who think, when you wear a skirt that you are gay of transvestism. The Anabolic Stereoids are to much, you know. I have tried to write it as well as I can, and hope you understand.
But when you ask me do you think it is strange ? I say, no because I wear skirts too and for me there is no barricade to wear a legging.
Do your thing Phytos, and let the stupid ones down in the s.h.i.t.
I think when you search the internet or in special shops you can find them. I think you must have the biggest size in leggings they have on stock.

With all due respect, I thought we buried disco along with Breshnev, Andropov, and a couple of Popes! Please, let's let them all moulder in peace...

With all due respect Sasquach, these are only called disco pant. They are not really just disco. I dislike the term myself, so you are not alone there. There are people out there that thing EVERYTHING of the 80s should also moulder, including miniskirts. I don't like that idea at all.
Rockster (sorry if I misnamed) These are actually small size. I wear small size leggings, and size B tights or hose.

Re: Why are these only for women?
Sorry too pythos. I made a mistake, because the scale of sizes in Europe is perhaps different opposite other countries.
I am a long man 1.86 mtr. That is the reason I must have European size 46-48 for stockings ect. I have one legging. The legging has one size and fit everyone. I think it is Lycra.
You are perhaps shorter of length. Am I right ?

Re: Why are these only for women?
Apparently some joking about the Disco Era that I posted got "moderated" out of this thread...without so much as the courtesy of a PM to explain the arbitration. If my posts were somehow offensive, at least a statement to that effect could (and should) have been offered. It seems the thread originator was afforded the chance to modify or replace his response; I was not.
I would have thought it obvious that my posts were light-hearted ribbing. Should I begin such posts with a disclaimer banner like THIS IS MATURE HUMOR: DON'T GET UPSET...? We are, presumably, adults on this forum, and we should be able to laugh at times. When we get to the point that every bit of joking or kidding is taken as insult, and we become so thin-skinned and sensitive that we can't even laugh at ourselves, I'd say we're in deep trouble. I'd like to think we are all friends on this forum, and that friends can indulge a bit of joking with each other. Are we to be sentenced to a posting world of humorless banality, where all but "supportive" PC hand-holding and pablum gets censored? Talk about a Life In Hell!
If I ever post a picture of myself in disco pants, please feel free to post some jokes about it. I'd be way more disturbed if you didn't.
My two cents.

Re: Why are these only for women?
Let me say I did not complain to the moderator of the site.
I did take the first jibe as just that. The second such post was taken a little less light heatedly (I got the point, you think these belong in the bin, along with disco), the third event following my post stating I wish you would think about how you would view these if they were not called disco pant, should have sent a message to you that your message was received, and not very well accepted. My feeling were not hurt however. I was just disheartened you would just focus on an aspect of the name of these things. You just could not separate the two, and look at the pants in a light separate from that horrible era of music.
It would seem the moderator saw that this was also the case, and edited the posts. He should have PMd you and explained, and most likely will. He may have been busy.
