Wore my Utilikilt out and about today

Post by JRMILLER »

Greetings oh skirted ones!
I purchased my first Utilikilt recently, it's a an original and looks like this:

I wore it out for a local lunch meeting to the local restaurant where everybody knows me. I walked tall and behaved as if it were just another pair of cargo shorts (which it kind of looks like). No one made any comments, didn't hear any muffled laughter or any such thing. Only the friend I had lunch with said anything and he said, "so, tell me about your...." at which point I filled in the word "kilt". I told him it was a contemporary, American made kilt and handed him a Utilikilt card (UK seeds your pocket with these). he said he thought it would be cool and comfortable and that was the end of it.

Pretty much a non-event as others have found.

Thought any of you out there on the fence might appreciate hearing people are the same in Ohio as elsewhere.

Cheers!
-John

I have never really had any issues while wearing a UK. Most of the time people that will react to it will do so positively. So other than a few gals digging on it, friends doing some slight ribbing and the occasional free beer the reactions are basically nil.

Well, that's what I was hoping for. I am sure a few people who know me will wonder what's up with Miller, but I really don't think it's any big deal. Afterall, it's a bloody kilt, made for men, worn by men, period. It's a bit unusual, but with all the kilts being sold, it may not be unique for very long!

Quakers and MUGs

Post by AMM »

Well, I wore my Utilikilt out and about to a committee meeting at my Quaker Meeting, and it excited no end of discussion. I had to explain to each person in turn what it was, whether it was really a kilt, why I was wearing it, whether I was "making a statement" with it, etc. The one male on the committee, who is inclined to be a bit domineering in a very Quakerly, passive-aggressive way, and who showed up last, greeted me with "you're wearing a skirt," in a "your underwear is showing" sort of way.

I took the line that "it's actually called a Utilikilt," explained that after walking up the hill to my apartment I didn't feel like roasting any more, etc., and eventually we went on to our long, tedious committee business.

I'm planning to wear it to Meeting the first warm Sunday, I imagine I'll spend the whole time explaining it to each person.

Maybe they're not really ready for me to wear a skirt to Meeting....

Amish

Post by Since1982 »

You think THAT was an experience, try wearing ANY kind of man's skirted garment in Amish country. I was originally born in Reading Pa. which has at least 4 separate Amish communities within a few miles of town. About 6 months ago I had to go to Reading to attend the reading of a will of a recently deceased far removed cousin who actually left me $161.45. I was one of 33 cousins that all recieved $161.45 ea. If I'd known it was such a small amount I'd not have bothered to even go.

While there, and as I've said on here many times, I haven't worn a pair of trousers to do anything for 3 years, I became the center of attention at the wake with quite a few friendly questions as to "why the skirt". It was so interesting I decided to take a ride out to an Amish area and see what responses I got there. To put it mildly, they (the Amish) either ignored me like a tree stump or (the younger ones) giggled away until the Elders shushed them all up. After that, it became quite boring as I was treated as if I didn't exist. I guess "freedom of expression" hasn't quite made it to Amish country yet. 8)
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.
