White skirts
It's spring, and a (not-so) young man's fancies turn to -- skirts!
As mentioned elsewhere, I was on college campuses the last few days and saw a lot of young women in those lightweight white skirts that just say "spring." I've always wanted a white skirt, but I'm not sure how practical (that Y-chromosome word!) they are.
I have a few pairs of white trousers, and I find they are simply fantastic stain- and dirt-magnets. I can seldom wear a pair for more than a day or two before I have to pull it off and do the old cold-water-and-handsoap treatment in numerous places.
So, a question (or two) -- probably mainly for the women at the cafe, since I have the impression that the men here have not tried white: how much trouble do white skirts have with dirt and stains? Are there things you can do to avoid the problem?
Those white skirts look comfortable and "free" (and -- dare I say it? -- cute), just the antidote for a day spent wearing armor plate^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hdenim jeans, but I fear they'd look a lot less cute after a few encounters with greasy car doors, rusty subway stanchions, spatters from mud puddles, and a stint sitting on the grass.

I've seen many girls in them, but they always seem to be avoid any kind of dirt or setting anywhere that could get them dirty. They're cute, but like most girls and cute, they avoid function and practicality. Yes, panties can easily be seen under them, unless you get one of the heavier skirts (not the super light weight ones made of tissue paper) that don't show everything.
Another slight problem they have is they're super light weight meaning if you have anything that pushes out in the front, it's going to be very visible. If you can, get one of the skirts in brown or black (I know it defeats the whole idea of spring) so they won't show the dirt, and your junk won't be nearly as visible wearing it. There used to be a whole bunch of the madras skirts at old navy that were brown and plaid with various designs to distract the eyes from anything sticking out. Some also had beads on them and were tie dyed and looked very cool, not to mention very inexpensive.
Those are also the skirts that you don't have to wear a thong with, hell many girls just wear regular brief style with them as they don't really care if they have a line showing or not. Because as my fiancee says "some girls just don't like butt floss".

One ensemble that I've always found elegant is a flowing white skirt with a lining for modesty's sake. A nice white shirt works well along with a white vest.
I've used whites and offwhites and light tans in one combination of another. I think if you worked sterile while for everything you'd look like Caspar the ghost.
I've taken this basic ensemble and teamed it with a light denim jacket or a medium brown leather vest.
At one time I had a pair of lace up white Victorian boots. Looked speldid with the options mentioned above, but boy did those boots get scummy!
You could also do a nice white/orrwhite/light tan flowing skirt, as long as there is a lining/petticoat for modesty with a vibrantcolored/patterned shirt.
I recall some shirts at Ron Jons with macho cars, beer bottles, etc, that would work well with a light sand flowing skirt.

I have to say my personal preference is for dark colours. Closest I ever get to white is my beige corduroy kilt. Though I have seen a pic of a white Utilikilt and it looked quite macho.

white skirts
I have a couple of off-white skirts and few other light couloured ones.
I think anything white will show the dirt - but then light couloured dirt and hairs show more readily on a dark coloured skirt.
I have a couple of black and navy blue woolen skirts ( ex government surplu WPC skirts) that are a nightmare for showing cat hairs.
As to the other problem with white skirts - I think that is down to shadows being cast. Any ripple in a dark skirt does not show as much. In one of my pictures I am wearing a dog tooth patern light coloured skirt and that was terrible for the shadows - although the picture posted was taken outside in my hairdressers garden. You can just about make out a vague outline of something up front if you look closely.
What do others think.

light coloured skirts
If anyone is interested the light couloured skirt is in my first picture - top of page one and the ex WPC skirt is at the bottom of page 1.
The WPC skirt is very warm very comfortable and has a heavy feel to it and nice deep pockets. why WPC's no longer skirts is a a mystery to me.

I have a long summery cotton/linen skirt from Eddie Bauer. It's loose-fitting and airy, but I never really wear it as all I do during the summer is work! I envisioned leisure time when I bought it (on sale, naturally), like sitting on the porch drinking mint juleps or some other typically southern past-time. Maybe this year.

I'm not sure I've gotten an answer as to whether or how women (college-age or otherwise) keep their white spring skirts from getting stained while playing frisbee, etc., but I did see some surprising things in the responses.
For some reason, the idea of lightweight and/or white skirts seems to bring out worries that people are going to be able to figure out what is underneath the skirt -- a bulge, panties, two legs, or something. I might understand it if we were talking about very sheer skirts -- I figure, if passers-by can read the label on your underwear through the skirt, it's too sheer -- none of the "white spring skirts" I've seen women wearing are anywhere near that transparent. But it seems to me that most people have a pretty good idea what they would find under your skirt (or in your trousers), and going to great lengths to hide it really just draws attention to it, almost as much as putting a transparent vinyl panel at the crotch. (Anybody remember the premise of the movie So Fine?) I would think that people would be more likely to turn and stare if a guy didn't have a bulge where they would expect one, etc.
To me, the whole point of spring dresses, shorts, etc., is to not put so much armor between your body and the world. It's to feel the gentle breezes on your legs and arms and the warm sun shining through to all the places you've had to keep covered up through the cold winter. To enjoy yourself with a little less than the usual heed to the consequences. And maybe to not worry so much about "The Rules."

I suppose it's all in how careful you are with your clothing, and, let's face it, your typical bloke isn't very fastidious when it comes to what he's wearing. That's probably the result of the dark bland attire we've worn all our lives and furthered down the road by the ever-present denim jean. That's not to say that your average Joe can't be fastidious and keep even white clean, but rather points up that he'll have to make an effort to not get careless and land on his keister in his nice white skirt after making an ill-advised lunge for a Frisbee that he should have let sail by. (Leading, of course, to his mates chastising him for not "making the effort".)AMM wrote:I'm not sure I've gotten an answer as to whether or how women (college-age or otherwise) keep their white spring skirts from getting stained while playing frisbee, etc., but I did see some surprising things in the responses.
Hear, hear! I'll heartily second that notion, and state that that is precisely one of the things I like best about springtime -- it's a breath of fresh air upon emerging from the dungeon that is Winter. And you're right -- white is one great way to celebrate that. I think I'll find me a nice white skirt once the dreariness that we have at the moment passes -- even if I have to make it.To me, the whole point of spring dresses, shorts, etc., is to not put so much armor between your body and the world. Material
White denim or twill is thick enough to not show anything through it. I have a white straight mid calf twill skirt that you can't see anything through, however, since I'm overweight, it does make me look even bigger so I don't wear it often. I do like the comfort of it though.

I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

re: white.
I wear a "tea length white dress" regularly. Pure white polyester "linen" (the weave and texture look like linen). It is a pain to keep it, as it is long and flowing, off the car floor, the regular floors when bending or kneeling, and those miserable grimy seatbelts! I wash it frequently in the washing machine and dryer - Love that Polyester!
It is somewhat see-through, and I wear something under it, usually my black ankle length cassock skirt, or just black trousers/black socks/black shirt.
I have another white A-line kneelength skirt for knocking around the house doing "maid duty". It is treated like an apron, kinda dirty from kneeling on the floor, wiping dusty hands on, washing dishes, polishing brass, etc.
For casual general wear when socialising, white is fine.

Maybe I'm a slob (Homer Simpson's double!?) but---whenever I wear a white anything socially I almost invariably have an "accident
with sauce, gasp-beetroot, gravy, or anything else messy so, whilst I do like white, I steer clear of it for practical reasons.

I was getting ready to go out to dinner tonight and have a shin-length white lined linen skirt with a navy blue/pink/grey argyle sweater and it looked great, except (a) I couldn't find a single pair of shoes that didn't look awkward with the white skirt and (b) it's a chilly, rainy night and somehow white just didn't seem appropriate.
Switched to a black skirt and all of a sudden the weather didn't matter and my Italian loafers looked OK.
I gotta find some shoes to wear with this outfit.

It is so bad for me, that when certain foods are on the menu, I have been know to remove my shirt and where my t-shirt to the table for fear of ruining it by slopping something on it.

It's good to hear that I'm not the only slob in the world.
