Skip,
When most guys suck their belly in, their pants fall straight to the floor. Technically, we (guys) could do with a "pull-on" with perhaps just a wee bit of elastic on the back. Women, on the other hand, actually have hips and waists and such and need a much more radical means of getting into their pants and skirts. Hence, the zippers.

Skip,

The history of left and right hand flies has been posted several times before and is based on the majority of people being right handed. Since gentlemen dressed themselves, they had a right opening for shirts, jackets and later trouser flys, whereas ladies usually had a dresser and so to make it easier for the dresser (also assumed to be right handed) the opening was to the wearers left (the dresser's right).

In recent years "mens" clothing has continued to be designed exclusively with right hand closures whereas it is not uncommon for "womens" clothing to open to the right even though the majority still opens to the left.
Since1982 wrote:Also, what do left handed males do, reach over and show the entire zipper to the world while opening it?
Not based on my observation, they simply use their right hands same, as the majority. When I wear a skirt with a left opening fly I use my left hand; it felt a little awkward the first few times but after a while it became as easy as using my right hand.

I can put several of my skirts on or remove them without unfastening them, however I prefer to have a usable fly since standing at a urinal with a skirt pulled up around my waist seems inappropriate and I'd far rather use a urinal than sit in a public cubicle of questionable hygiene. (With apologies to those of a delicate disposition who may have just received too much information).

Have fun,

Ian.

I like the idea of posting where we have found good skirts so that others can benefit but you could make it far easier if you included a link to the skirts in your posts rather than leaving folks to search for them.
I would have done, but wasn't sure if posting links up was allowed, so erred with caution. :)
If I can, I'll put up links in future.

[Mod hat on] and for once it isn't scratchy!

Links, so long as they are appropriate to the mission of SkirtCafe are welcome. The "url" bbcode tag is your friend in this regard.

[Mod hat off]

Lots of things can be found on the Internet, and certainly skirts are some of those things. The devil, of course, is in the details, and not everybody on the planet has access to the same resources as anybody else. But, given that, links cannot hurt and may hopefully inspire.

Ian, I find that people that are considered lefties but use their right hands in doing things that are traditionally done right handed aren't really lefties, they're ambidextrous. I'm a "dedicated" leftie and that means I use my left hand for everything I possibly can, as far as I'm concerned my right hand and arm is for weight balance, so I don't tip over to the left when walking. I don't move zippers anymore because I've taken to sitting for any tasks in the "Men's Room" other than washing my hands. I'd probably be killed at the first meal I attended in any Muslim country for eating with my left hand.

I think normal fishing rods with conventional reels on them were accidently created for left handed people. A right handed person when fishing with one looks like he's somehow crippled with the rod under his right arm and using his right hand to turn the handle. A left handed fisher has the rod under his left arm and holds the foregrip with his left hand and turns the handle with his right hand. The difficult part of using a conventional rod is working the rod, not the reel.

If you know any dedicated lefties, ask them about their feelings about where zippers are. You might be surprised by their answers. Have fun, buddy.. :alien: :hide: :alien:

All of my skirts are ladies. I get them off good old ebay. I mainly like denim skirts as they are more practical with pockets and stuff, but I do have a short black pleated skirt.

I think this would work well, but I'm waiting until it becomes a sale item; I can't justify almost £40 on a skirt.

I have a great shop to buy denim skirts from. For 30 years I bought denim shorts from a store that custom cut off the legs and sewed the hem to look professional. For the last 10 years I have bought them there and had them use leg material to make wider belt loops than the ones Lee Jeans supplies. Since 2005 I've asked them to cut off the legs and instead of making them into shorts, make them into skirts. At first they balked. It's a hard core Men's store. But when I explained how much more comfortable and useful a straight skirt was for my physical problems they tried making them for me. They did a great job and I've not had a problem with any of them. Average price completed was around $50.00. For the last 3 years, I've had them sew the fly shut as I'm no longer standing at urinals anywhere. I'm going to ask them if they mind me putting a link to their store in this site. I wouldn't want to do it without their permission. 8)

I've bought one of these today, in the 'midnight' blue.
cool, comfortable, fits great. I got an assistant to measure the waist on a size 12 and was exactly 33" (my size)

I prefer the zipper on the side or the back for a clean look and some are elastic or drawstring waist. About half of my skirts have a front zipper, some left, mostly right. I guess I'm ambidextrous, I use the hand that works with which ever zipper.

I do have lots of women skirts cos of size - Im too slim as my waist still between 26"-27", love mini skirt all way with tights on. Yes it look great on men with women skirt also men skirt as well - depend on size as I cant wear men clothes cos it too big for me. I wear black tights, denim mini skirt and went out to wash my car as people already passing my home and seen my in full clothes - it went fine.

It's about 14 inches total length, although it seems a bit shorter than others I have.

This is a similar style, albeit longer and more expensive, available from http://www.MarksandSpencer.com which I've ordered:

Also, I think the following look good (including some of the colours for the more flamboyant (sp?) here):

I've also ordered the last one in Lemon. Other colours are available.
