So let me get this straight, Peter, you would consider most clothes men wear, T-shirts, regular mens shoes, white socks as a "costume"? What would you have us wear, all the lacy tops, high heeled shoes, sheer nylons, makeup and bleached hair you affect? I just want to wear a skirt for comfort, I don't want to look like an imitation woman. :blue:
I would think that for many it is the traditional "costume" for men. Just as the traditional office wear is most likely a three piece suit. And no of course not. By saying that I am NOT stating that it is the only clothing worn by men. In more remote places i would expect the cowboy heritage to be dominant, and so on. But as a man wearing skirts, yes a man, 8) who has been wearing nothing else but skirts and dresses 24/7 the past year in public, 8) :D then I would have to wear the normal men's garderobe, in whatever style.
And what is this about makeup and bleached hair? I certainly DO NOT wear any makeup at all! And my own natural hair is thin hair, getting pretty thjinned out on top :( , and is a natural grey, probably from the unpleasant years gone by. :(

I am not ashamed of how I dress, of who I am. And I don't hide it. I say that I wear skirts / dresses 24/7 and I do, as can be seen on my photo's and read in my postings. I am every bit a man. And will do everything to advocate fashion freedom, in which men can wear skirts freely and with no inhibitions as to which clothing they are to wear.

And there is more choice to men wearing skirts than only the skirt. In that respect everybody can fill that requirement in to his personal choice. There should never be any limiting definition with regards to how a skirt wearing man should look like.

Wear what you want. There is nobody out there telling you what to wear ( except perhaps a man's partner :? ) and to whom's advice you must followup.
A man is the same man in a pair of pants or a skirt. It is only the way people look at him that makes the difference.

...that sounds brave to me, jaycee, and deserves as much cheer. As was mentioned earlier in another thread, 'brave' is probably an overstatement with a great many of our lads and lasses doing much braver things than I'll ever achieve. If it means that one day the extra camouflage gets to be removed as our fears become less acute, then that's the way to play it. It's the end result that counts - however long it might take.
I mentioned to someone in a recent PM response that I've also found that just having a backpack on (which is handy anyway for what I might need in my travels - for cameras, showerproof rainwear, fodder, etc), makes you appear to be a hiker. For some reason there doesn't seem to be any reason required to be in a workmanlike skirt (denim in my case), instead of shorts, if you're hiking. Perhaps it does represent a more comfortable/practical item of clothing used in that way. And if you can look like it's no big deal to you, so much the better. The backpack is 'camouflage' in a way, or at least hoping to confuse the issue, but also handy at the same time. Not much good in a non-backpack place, but if you live in an area where hiking is active, perhaps that might be an optional way to adopt at the outset.

Well said, and very true. Although most people don't make skirt wearing an issue. Like I can imagine when people see a man in a kilt, in Schotland, they assume that it is relevant to his culture. When a man is seen in a skirt SOME may think it is because he wishes to be seen as a woman or other nonsens. Little do they know that the man in a skirt is a Scott and the kilted man is an Australian... They are only made up situations, but we all know that some people need something to confirm that which they see.

You don't have to please the audience and there is no fixed audience to please. So the only thing left is to be yourself.

And a small minority of people may not understand and question a man in a skirt, as they are not capable of rational thinking. Therefore when a man is seen as a backpakker, I would assume that the general concensus is that he is more of an einzelganger than the general public, maybe even have some Hippy background. I would then again assume that skirt wearing is not an unusual thing for such people. Whereas seeing an otherwise "normal" looking man, neatly dressed in midtown ...um London in a skirt would be conflicting information, again for the minority of people who are not so literate or understanding. The Idea being that they cannot combine the man and his choice of clothing, making them possibly jumping to the conclusion ( in their warped way of thinking) that the man has other motives for wearing a skirt other than just as a piece of clothing.

But the important thing is to wear what you want to. Don't let others dictate to you what you are to wear.
Try to get to that point in as short a time space as possible.

I am just catching up with things having been on holiday for the last 2 weeks. Well done Mugman for giving an account of your day out, I like your car as I also drive an MG although mine is an MGB. I think that the sight of a man wearing a skirt is no big deal with people these days. Before I went on holiday I went shopping in Bristol and was wearing a calf length denim skirt and black tights. I went in several shops , no shocked looks or comments. Only passing a bus stop did I notice a girl look twice trying to take in what I was wearing.

I wish I still had my last MGA 1957 convertible, fire house red with tiger striped interior and all leather steering wheel, dashboard and shift knob. I have pictures of it when my grand dad owned it, he was the mechanic that brought it back to life from a junk yard hulk. RRRRRRRRRRRUMMMM RRRRRRRUMMMM...I can still hear it in my mind. :hooray:

I have been all over skirted ; groceries , shopping malls , restaurants , movies , theatre , bars , shows & concerts ...
buses and subways ... Most people do not pay attention !!!

The idea is , to be in harmony with yourself and be self-confident whenever/wherever you go !!!

From my perspective , men in skirt as an "alternative fashion" is accepted theese days !!!

But , it has not become popular yet , because most men are affraid to go public about it !!!
When you look good , you can go anywhere !!!

I went out last night with a few mates and even though I wore jeans, shirt, and a new grey and black sweater. I had makeup on with purple eyeshadow and mascara. The people that I was with are very open-minded and I completely forgot in a very crowded mexican restaurant that I even had a trace of makeup on!

I then went to a club where there were quite a few girls around my age, some I danced with.. I don't know if they noticed my makeup or not, but it didn't seem to bother any of them in the slightest. In fact, I'm getting the idea that if I wear some of it, I actually get more positive attention than just some average Joe.

Belated Congrats!! I think you hit on the 'first time in a skirt formula' perfectly! Taking things/places/skirts one at a time. I (although I've ridden a bike skirted for many years!) did the 'petrol station manouvre' as my first car/daylight stage. In various skirts, of different styles/lengths to be honest, before feeling (mentally) totally comfortable. Get that none event out of the way, and it's surprising how soon you can forget you are wearing something different from the norm. When I first tried it abroad, alone, it seemed much 'easier', if you get my meaning. Again, you can just 'wear & forget' denim knee (or thereabouts, but not below!) skirts. If the odd perceptive (or curious) person does actually 'click', then maybe a quick smile (in acknowledgement) and carry on your way. I remember in Austria, a few summer's back, as I wandered past, I heard a lady in her garden tell her husband, "Look, that man's wearing a skirt!" (In German, of course!). All her husband did was look up briefly, say, "Yes, dear!", and carry on with his weeding! I'll be in Linz, Austria shortly, but that'll be in a floor length black skirt. Why? Fits in quite nicely with the considerable Goth element in the city, albeit, they're half my age!
